Enzyme nomenclature 1978

Enzyme nomenclature 1978 PDF Author: Commission on Biochemical Commission on Biochemical Nome
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323144608
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 613

Book Description
Enzyme Nomenclature (1978) is an attempt to address the problems and difficulties that arise in the naming of enzymes and coenzymes. In this regard, the International Union of Biochemistry established the International Commission on Enzymes with the task of creating a standard or code for the future naming of enzymes and to correct and organize the existing names and groups. The text is divided to five chapters where the last two are references and index to the enzyme list. Chapter 1 establishes the premise of the text and explains the historical development of the commissions. Chapter 2 meanwhile gives more details regarding the general principles of enzymes and their system of classification. The rules for classification and nomenclature, as well as the key to the numbering and classification, of enzymes are also discussed. Finally, Chapter 3 lists all of the enzymes under several groups such as hydrolases and ligases. The book will be a valuable source of reference not just for students but also for scientists and researchers in the field of biochemistry, applied science, and nutrition.

ENZYMES: Catalysis, Kinetics and Mechanisms

ENZYMES: Catalysis, Kinetics and Mechanisms PDF Author: N.S. Punekar
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811307857
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 560

Book Description
This enzymology textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate students covers the syllabi of most universities where this subject is regularly taught. It focuses on the synchrony between the two broad mechanistic facets of enzymology: the chemical and the kinetic, and also highlights the synergy between enzyme structure and mechanism. Designed for self-study, it explains how to plan enzyme experiments and subsequently analyze the data collected. The book is divided into five major sections: 1] Introduction to enzymes, 2] Practical aspects, 3] Kinetic Mechanisms, 4] Chemical Mechanisms, and 5] Enzymology Frontiers. Individual concepts are treated as stand-alone chapters; readers can explore any single concept with minimal cross-referencing to the rest of the book. Further, complex approaches requiring specialized techniques and involved experimentation (beyond the reach of an average laboratory) are covered in theory with suitable references to guide readers. The book provides students, researchers and academics in the broad area of biology with a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of enzymes. It also caters to those who do not have a practicing enzymologist to teach them the subject.

Restriction Endonucleases

Restriction Endonucleases PDF Author: Alfred Pingoud
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642188516
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 462

Book Description
Restriction enzymes are highly specific nucleases which occur ubiquitously among prokaryotic organisms, where they serve to protect bacterial cells against foreign DNA. Many different types of restriction enzymes are known, among them multi-subunit enzymes which depend on ATP or GTP hydrolysis for target site location. The best known representatives, the orthodox type II restriction endonucleases, are homodimers which recognize palindromic sequences, 4 to 8 base pairs in length, and cleave the DNA within or immediately adjacent to the recognition site. In addition to their important biological role (up to 10 % of the genomes of prokaryotic organisms code for restriction/modification systems!), they are among the most important enzymes used for the analysis and recombination of DNA. In addition, they are model systems for the study of protein-nucleic acids interactions and, because of their ubiquitous occurence, also for the understanding of the mechanisms of evolution.

Enzyme Nomenclature 1978

Enzyme Nomenclature 1978 PDF Author: Sam Stuart
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 148327327X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 616

Book Description
Enzyme Nomenclature 1978 is based upon the recommendations of the Nomenclature Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry on the Nomenclature and Classification of Enzymes. This book deals with the naming of enzymes. The text describes problems encountered in the past when individual scientists named enzymes randomly, resulting in duplication, misnomers, and confusion. Some order followed upon the establishment of the International Commission on Enzymes. This book also explains the classification and nomenclature scheme through general principles that should be followed in dealing with enzymes. The text describes the systematic and trivial names, the key to numbering of enzymes, and the rules of classification and nomenclature. The book also contains the enzyme list including the class of oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, and ligases (synthetases). The appendix contains the nomenclature of electron-transfer proteins, which include flavoproteins, proteins containing reducible disulfide, cytochromes, iron-sulfur proteins, and other metalloproteins. An index lists all the enzymes in alphabetical order. This handy reference will be useful for scientists involved in bio-chemistry, molecular biology, micro-biology, and researchers whose works involve enzyme and medical research.

Cells: Molecules and Mechanisms

Cells: Molecules and Mechanisms PDF Author: Eric Wong
Publisher: Axolotl Academic Publishing
ISBN: 0985226110
Category : Biology
Languages : en
Pages : 283

Book Description
"Yet another cell and molecular biology book? At the very least, you would think that if I was going to write a textbook, I should write one in an area that really needs one instead of a subject that already has multiple excellent and definitive books. So, why write this book, then? First, it's a course that I have enjoyed teaching for many years, so I am very familiar with what a student really needs to take away from this class within the time constraints of a semester. Second, because it is a course that many students take, there is a greater opportunity to make an impact on more students' pocketbooks than if I were to start off writing a book for a highly specialized upper- level course. And finally, it was fun to research and write, and can be revised easily for inclusion as part of our next textbook, High School Biology."--Open Textbook Library.

Introduction to Enzyme and Coenzyme Chemistry

Introduction to Enzyme and Coenzyme Chemistry PDF Author: T. D. H. Bugg
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118348990
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
Enzymes are giant macromolecules which catalyse biochemical reactions. They are remarkable in many ways. Their three-dimensional structures are highly complex, yet they are formed by spontaneous folding of a linear polypeptide chain. Their catalytic properties are far more impressive than synthetic catalysts which operate under more extreme conditions. Each enzyme catalyses a single chemical reaction on a particular chemical substrate with very high enantioselectivity and enantiospecificity at rates which approach “catalytic perfection”. Living cells are capable of carrying out a huge repertoire of enzyme-catalysed chemical reactions, some of which have little or no precedent in organic chemistry. The popular textbook Introduction to Enzyme and Coenzyme Chemistry has been thoroughly updated to include information on the most recent advances in our understanding of enzyme action, with additional recent examples from the literature used to illustrate key points. A major new feature is the inclusion of two-colour figures, and the addition of over 40 new figures of the active sites of enzymes discussed in the text, in order to illustrate the interplay between enzyme structure and function. This new edition provides a concise but comprehensive account from the perspective of organic chemistry, what enzymes are, how they work, and how they catalyse many of the major classes of enzymatic reactions, and will continue to prove invaluable to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of organic, bio-organic and medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, biochemistry and biotechnology.
