Education of Minorities and Peace Education in Pluralistic Societies

Education of Minorities and Peace Education in Pluralistic Societies PDF Author: Yaacov Iram
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313051739
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
The existence of minorities will grow in most countries of the world because of sociopolitical upheaval and economic crisis, both of which result in waves of migration. Contributors to this volume discuss the task of education to alleviate the problems arising from the mix of peoples of various ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and religious backgrounds. No education system alone can create a just and equal society, and education by itself is not enough to achieve peace. Nevertheless, educational efforts assisted by other institutional commitments and actions are essential in order to create an atmosphere of justice, mutual recognition, and acceptance as preconditions for peaceful coexistence within groups and between people. As a result of worldwide migration in reaction to wars and other geopolitical conflicts, as well as economic crisis, many modern nation-states consist of a mix of people of various ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and religious backgrounds. Indeed, there are very few countries that are monocultural. Here contributors discuss how it is imperative that multicultural education be promoted to achieve awareness, then tolerance, and finally acceptance of ethnic and other diversity within societies.

The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Children's Issues Worldwide [6 volumes]

The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Children's Issues Worldwide [6 volumes] PDF Author: Irving Epstein
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313055556
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 3026

Book Description
From the skyrocketing AIDS rate in Haiti to the oppressive pollution in industrial China, from the violent street culture of Nigeria to the crippling poverty in Nicaragua, from child trafficking in Thailand to child marriages in India, this jam-packed six-volume set explores all these issues and more in an unprecedented look at the world's children at the dawn of the 21st century. In recent years, while many countries have enjoyed a higher standard of living and improved working conditions, others have been torn apart by war and incapacitated by famine, and are struggling to improve life for their children and their future. Recent concern over the world's children has resulted in a global attempt to define what constitutes an acceptable childhood. New attention has been paid, not only to healthcare and secondary education, but also to the right to play and increased access to technology. The UN's codification of children's rights has done much to expand our understanding of what is needed for healthy growth and development of children and youth. Organized by region, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Children's Issues Worldwide is the first globally focused set of this magnitude, offering extensive, up-to-date coverage of these critical issues. Original chapters accessibly synthesize current data on key topics, including education, play and recreation, child labor, family, health, laws and legal status, religious life, abuse and neglect, and growing up in the 21st century.

Image and Word PDF Author: Antonella Braida
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351197738
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
"What was the role of images in the Western tradition? And how did they relate to the printed work? The essays in this wide-ranging collection address these questions by presenting a variety of material, including visual representations that can be read as texts and traditional book illustrations. The editors offer a critical review of visual arts and texts, encompassing thirteenth-century Spanish miniatures, Italian Renaissance painting and book illustrations, the explosion of inter-arts comparisons in the nineteenth century in the works of such diverse writers as Blake, Mallarme and D'Annunzio, and the modern debate on the visual arts."
