PROMOTION DE LA SANTE ET AUTONOMISATION DANS LE CONTEXTE AFRICAIN
Author: David HouŽto
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1291761152
Category : Reference
Languages : fr
Pages : 327
Book Description

ISBN: 1402056222
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 244
Book Description
This book presents a historical panorama of the evolution of demographic thought from its eighteenth-century origins up to the present day. The book uses this to demonstrate how the multilevel approach can resolve some of the contradictions that have become apparent and achieve a synthesis of the different approaches employed. This is both a textbook and an assessment of the multilevel analysis that broadens the scope of demography with its approach.

SARS
Author: World Health Organization. Regional Office for the Western Pacific
Publisher: World Health Organization
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 324
Book Description
The severe acute respiratory syndrome virus (SARS) first emerged in southern China in November 2002 and in the following months spread to 12 other countries in the Western Pacific region (where 95 per cent of the global cases took place) with devastating force. By July 2004, when the epidemic was finally declared over, it had killed nearly 800 people including many healthcare workers. Although by some standards, this first emerging and readily transmissible disease of the 21st century was not a big killer, it caused more fear and social disruption than any other outbreak of our time. Written largely by the public health experts and scientists involved in efforts to control the epidemic, this publication examines the emergence and spread of SARS, the public health measures taken to deal with it, the epidemiology of the SARS coronavirus (SAR-CoV) and vaccine development, and its impact on people and economies in individual countries, in the region and around the world.

Biodiversity of Malaria in the World
Author: Jean Mouchet
Publisher: John Libbey Eurotext
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 468
Book Description
One million dead a Wear, 500 million with the disease, 2.5 billion people at risk : this is the malaria balance sheet in 2007. The distribution and seriousness of the disease depend on the pathogens and vectors involved, as welt as environmental conditions. Of the four parasites (Plasmodium), only P. falciparum kilts although the other three cause debilitating disease with regular relapses and recrudescence. More than fifty species of Anopheles can fulfil the vector rote which is essential in transmission of the parasite between human beings. Climatic factors (temperature and rainfall), the environment and biogeographical particularities dictate the distribution of anopheline species and determine transmission rates. This is why it makes sense to tank about the biodiversity of malaria. Today, more than 90% of deaths from malaria occur in Tropical Africa which is home to only 10% of humanity. Every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria. This continent harbours the most effective vectors (An. gambiae and An. funestus, in particular) and the climate is highly conducive to transmission of the disease. Severe malaria is also seen in forest foci in Southeast Asia, Papua-New Guinea and the Amazon. In the rest of the tropical and subtropical world, P. vivax and/or P malariae cause less severe disease.

South Korea under Compressed Modernity
Author: Kyung-Sup Chang
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136990259
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 270
Book Description
The condensed social change and complex social order governing South Koreans’ life cannot be satisfactorily delineated by relying on West-derived social theories or culturalist arguments. Nor can various globally eye-catching traits of this society in industrial work, education, popular culture, and a host of other areas be analyzed without developing innovative conceptual tools and theoretical frameworks designed to tackle the South Korean uniqueness directly. This book provides a fascinating account of South Korean society and its contemporary transformation. Focusing on the family as the most crucial micro foundation of South Korea’s economic, social, and political life, Chang demonstrates a shrewd insight into the ways in which family relations and family based interests shape the structural and institutional changes ongoing in South Korea today. While the excessive educational pursuit, family-exploitative welfare, gender-biased industrialization, virtual demise of peasantry, and familial industrial governance in this society have been frequently discussed by local and international scholarship, the author innovatively explicates these remarkable trends from an integrative theoretical perspective of compressed modernity. The family-centered social order and everyday life in South Korea are analyzed as components and consequences of compressed modernity. South Korea under Compressed Modernity is an essential read for anyone studying Contemporary Korea or the development of East Asian societies more generally.
