Embassies in Crisis

Embassies in Crisis PDF Author: Rogelia Pastor-Castro
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351123483
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
Embassies are integral to international diplomacy, their staff instrumental to inter-governmental dialogue, strategic partnerships, trading relationships and cultural exchange. But Embassies are also discreet political spaces. Notionally sovereign territory ‘immune’ from local jurisdiction, in moments of crisis Embassies have often been targets of protest and sites of confrontation. It is this aspect of Embassy experience that this collection of essays explores and Embassies in Crisis revisits flashpoints in the recent lives of Embassies overseas at times of acute political crisis. Ranging across multiple British and other embassy crises, unusually, this book offers equal insights to international historians and members of the diplomatic community.

RAF Strike Command, 1968–2007

RAF Strike Command, 1968–2007 PDF Author: Kev Darling
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1783378549

Pages : 743

Book Description
Aviation author Kev Darling looks at the origins of the World War Two Royal Air Force commands and histories in RAF Strike Command. In 1968, the RAF Commands that had become famous in World War Two—Fighter, Bomber, Coastal, Air Support and Signals Commands—were combined into the single Strike Command, an amalgamation that served throughout the remaining years of the Cold War, in the Falklands, and in the Middle East in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Granby. This organizational change caused re-equipment, base changes and increasing economic constraints. The Royal Navy was now responsible for the UK’s nuclear deterrent in the form of their Polaris submarines, so the RAF’s V-Bomber Force were now relegated to tanker operations, with the exception of the lone Vulcan that was sent to the Falklands conflict. The Command’s fleet of fast jets became more adaptable, with single types assuming the roles of fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, and maritime attack. The aircraft also became multinational in their design and manufacture as Britain’s postwar lead in aircraft design had been frittered away by years of thoughtless government, leading to a single company for production. Apart from the brilliant Harrier which the US continues to develop and build, other aircraft flown by the Command were from European syndicates, such as the Tornado and Jaguar. The US supplied the transports in the form of the faithful Hercules, and Europe most of the helicopter fleet. Exploring the operations that took place during this military wing’s existence, the aircraft they flew and the men who flew them, RAF Strike Command is a tribute to the fast-dwindling power of the Royal Air Force.

Britain's Glorious Aircraft Industry

Britain's Glorious Aircraft Industry PDF Author: J Paul Hodgson

ISBN: 1526774674
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 588

Book Description
“The rich and diverse history of the British aircraft industry is captured in superb detail by the author in this weighty tome.” —Aviation News Great Britain’s aircraft industry started in 1908, with the first formally registered organization in the world to offer to design and build an aeroplane “for commercial gain.” This book tells the complete story of the 110 years since the start, all the companies formed and the aircraft they produced, highlighting the advances in aeronautical ambition and technology. It is the story of the creation, survival and decline of all one hundred and twenty-three of the aircraft design and construction companies formed between 1908 and 2018. The exhilaration of success and the magic of aviation technology are vividly illustrated by the technical and political birth stories of iconic projects, such as the Cirrus/Gypsy Moths, the Tiger Moth, the flying boats of Imperial Airways, Spitfire, Lancaster, Viscount, Vulcan, Harrier, Buccaneer and many more. The rotary wing industry is not forgotten. The birth of the jet turbine engine and the quest for supersonic speed is included. The stories of the disappointments of failure and disaster, such as the Brabazon, Comet, Princess, Rotodyne and TSR-2, and the growth of international collaboration in Concorde, Tornado, Airbus, Eurofighter Typhoon and other projects are included, in the context of the international scene and domestic politics. The conclusion highlights the prominent reminiscences and speculates on the future of the aircraft industry in Britain. “An outstanding reference book and a thoroughly enjoyable canter through the decades, from the days of wood and fabric to the modern composite structure of the wings of the A400 Atlas.” —RAF Historical Society
