Amitav Ghosh’s Culture Chromosome PDF Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004360344
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 367

Book Description
An Indian Bengali by birth, Amitav Ghosh has established himself as a major voice in what is often called world literature, addressing issues such as the post-colonial and neo-colonial predicaments, the plight of the subalterns, the origin of globalisation and capitalism, and lately ecology and migration. The volume is therefore divided according to the four domains that lie at the heart of Ghosh’s writing practice: anthropology, epistemology, ethics and space. In this volume, a number of scholars from all over the world have come together to shed new light on the works and poetics of Amitav Ghosh according to the epistemic frameworks that form the bedrock of his fiction. Contributors: Safoora Arbab, Carlotta Beretta, Lucio De Capitani, Asis De, Lenka Filipova, Letizia Garofalo, Swapna Gopinath, Evelyne Hanquart-Turner, Sabine Lauret-Taft, Carol Leon, Kuldeep Mathur, Fiona Moolla, Sambit Panigrahi, Madhsumita Pati, Murari Prasad, Luca Raimondi, Pabitra Kumar Rana, Ilaria Rigoli, Sneharika Roy, John Thieme, Alessandro Vescovi.

ISBN: 1616404604
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 740

Book Description
An Egyptian Hieroglyphic Dictionary, a two volume set written by Egyptian expert E.A. Wallis Budge, is quite simply one of the most comprehensive and detailed dictionaries of Egyptian hieroglyphs with English to accompany it. The series includes a detailed Introduction by the author with key words and glyphs, a bibliography of works used to help with translation and research, glyphs organized alphabetically by the Egyptian alphabet with accompanying words and English translations, tables of hieroglyphs with phonetic and numeric values and accompanying translations, and an Index of both English and Egyptian words. Volume I includes the introduction, bibliography, a list of characters separated by subject and organized by table, and letters "A" through "KH" or "KHA" of hieroglyphs and translations. SIR ERNEST ALFRED THOMPSON WALLIS BUDGE (1857-1934) was born in Bodmin, Cornwall in the UK and discovered an interest in languages at a very early age. Budge spent all his free time learning and discovering Semitic languages, including Assyrian, Syriac, and Hebrew. Eventually, through a close contact, he was able to acquire a job working with Egyptian and Iraqi artifacts at the British Museum. Budge excavated and deciphered numerous cuneiform and hieroglyphic documents, contributing vastly to the museum's collection. Eventually, he became the Keeper of his department, specializing in Egyptology. Budge wrote many books during his lifetime, most specializing in Egyptian life, religion, and language.

Coptic Gnostic chrestomathy

Coptic Gnostic chrestomathy PDF Author: Bentley Layton
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
Layton's Coptic Gnostic Chrestomathy is an essential tool for scholars and students of the Gnostic corpus. This useful and accurate text edition contains a large, representative selection of works in Coptic, ranging from Sethian Gnostic classics such as the Apocryphon of John to Valentinian works like the Gospel of Truth and Gospel of Philip to the Mesopotamian Gospel of Thomas the Contender, all but one from the Nag Hammadi manuscript hoard. Laid out in a readable literary format, the Coptic text is discreetly analyzed into its component morphs, clarifying the grammatical structure at every point. Greek words are annotated in footnotes, and esoteric Gnostic vocabulary in Egyptian Coptic is covered in a separate glossary. A brief introduction to each work points to information on problems of dialect, grammar, manuscript, and scholarly bibliography. Prepared by a leading expert on Gnosticism and the Coptic language, this is the ideal Gnostic text collection, in a single volume, for the use of scholars of religion, Egyptologists, Coptologists, teachers, and students. Contents (in Coptic): Apocryphon of John, Apocalypse of Adam, Hypostasis of the Archons, Thunder-Perfect Mind, Trimorphic Protennoia, Gospel of the Egyptians, Zostrianos, Allogenes, Three Steles of Seth, Gospel of Truth, Prayer of the Apostle Paul, Treatise on Resurrection, Gospel of Philip, Gospel of Thomas, Book of Thomas the Contender. Corresponding English translations of all these works can be found in Bentley Layton, The Gnostic Scriptures.

Second Mencken Chrestomathy

Second Mencken Chrestomathy PDF Author: H.L. Mencken
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0307831116
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 651

Book Description
Before there was any such thing as political correctness, H. L. Mencken was flouting it. He was also cheerfully deriding the precursors of family values and lambasting the guardians of public virtue. This historic new collection is further evidence that Mencken was our most astute, stylish, and biliously funny commentator on the eternal American quackeries. A Second Mencken Chrestomathy (a word meaning “a collection of choice passages from an author or authors”) was compiled by the sage of Baltimore before he suffered the stroke that ended his career and has only now been retrieved from his private papers by the columnist and Mencken biographer Terry Teachout. Its 238 selections—many of which have never before been published in book form—encompass subjects from Americana (“The Commonwealth of Morons”) to men and women (“Sex on the Stage”) and from criminology (“More and Better Psychopaths”) to the pursuit of happiness (“Alcohol”). The result is Mencken at his most engaging, maddening, heretical, and hilarious.

Ethiopian literature (in amharic)

Ethiopian literature (in amharic) PDF Author: Balashova, G.A.
Publisher: MeaBooks Inc
ISBN: 1988391024
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 229

Book Description
The Reader includes sample works of modern writers starting with the first story by Afewerk Ghebre Jesus written in 1908 up to the writings of the early 2000s, which continue Amharic literature in various genres. The Chrestomathy is supplemented with linguistic and cultural comments of lexical, grammatical and ethno-cultural nature. Short biographies of the writers are included. Ethiopian literature is justly considered young, though it is based on a very old cultural foundation. Its major benefit is the focus on an individual person displaying moral integrity and unity with the environment.
