Publisher: UPA
ISBN: 076186654X
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en

Book Description
The Syntax and Semantics of English Auxiliaries by Kurd Learners at College Level is concerned with the syntactic and semantic aspects of English auxiliary verbs (which comprise the primary and the modals) as a problematic area for English foreign language learners. The study aims at investigating Kurd EFL learners’ ability in recognizing and producing the various forms and meanings of English auxiliary verbs, clarifying the problems that Kurd EFL learners encounter in learning the auxiliary verbs and identifies the sources behind them, and trying to put suitable suggestions to overcome these problems. Its use of error analysis methodology makes this study unique as there are no other studies within its field to deal with topic in such a systematic and analytical method.

Auxiliaries

Auxiliaries PDF Author: Bernd Heine
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195359275
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
Offering a new perspective on auxiliaries in particular and language structure in general, this study argues that language cannot be explained satisfactorily with reference to linguistic variables alone; what is required in addition are extra-linguistic parameters relating to how we perceive the world around us, and how we utilize the linguistic resources available to us to conceptualize our experiences, and to communicate successfully. Rather than a closed, self-contained system, language is an entity that is constantly shaped by such external factors as cognitive forces, pragmatic manipulation, history, etc. These factors are responsible for the emergence of chain-like linguistic structures, and auxiliaries are typical examples of such structures, which Heine describes as grammaticalization chains. A limited number of concrete event schemas are discussed and these schemas are shown to be responsible for much of the linguistic diversity that auxiliary constructions exhibit in the languages of the world.

Modal Auxiliaries from Late Old to Early Middle English

Modal Auxiliaries from Late Old to Early Middle English PDF Author: Kousuke Kaita
Publisher: Herbert Utz Verlag
ISBN: 3831643784
Category : English language
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Why do Modern English modal auxiliaries ought to, should, and must, meaning OBLIGATION, occur in the present tense, yet their forms are in the preterite? Why does to accompany ought? One of the solutions to these questions is to look at the history of the English language. This monograph deals with the history of ought to, should, and must, which are of different syntactic and semantic origins: ought to stems from a main verb of Old English āgan ‘to have’ (POSSESSION) along with to; should derives from sculan ‘must’ with its ‘deviation’ to shall, and mōtan originates in ‘to be allowed to’ (PERMISSION). The work concentrates on the transition from Old English (700-1100) to Middle English (1100-1500), which is a crucial period in the history of the English language. Topics addressed include the linguistic review of modality, the philological reading of primary texts, and the occasional reference to the other Germanic languages.
