Book Description
Agriculture is one of the most important economic sectors of Sri Lanka and is key to the livelihoodof its population. As agriculture is one of the sectors most vulnerable to climate change, a thorough understanding of its impact is critical for formulating informed and effective adaptation strategies. Climate change challenges agriculture in many ways and affects – directly or indirectly – the economy, productivity, employment and food security. Assessing the impacts of climate change on crops is fundamental for elaborating evidence-based adaptation policies and strategies, guaranteeing sustainable pathways towards intensification and adopting climate-smart agricultural practices. This report presents insights about future climate change impacts on six crops (rice, maize, green gram, big onion, chilli and potato), selected according to a wide range of criteria: contribution to gross domestic product, relevance to food security and role as staple food, importance for farming systems, social impact, effect on employment, role as animal feed, consumer preferences, contribution to the export market, climatic vulnerability/resilience, market prices and price fluctuations, and farming input requirements.

Development Under Stress
Author: Saman Kelegama
Publisher: SAGE
ISBN: 9780761935360
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 314
Book Description
Sri Lanka is credited with being the pioneer of economic liberalisation in South Asia. Why, then, is economic progress painfully slow with the outcome being far below the country’s potential? This book examines the process of development and the implementation of reforms in Sri Lanka after the economic liberalisation of 1977. The author shows that while part of the story lies in the ongoing conflict in the North-East, which has lasted over 20 years, there are a number of other factors which have impeded economic progress, thereby, designating it development under stress The book describes the key features of the Sri Lankan socio-political and economic system that prevented the country from achieving higher levels of economic growth. It explains why the country could not match the economic achievements of South Korea and Malaysia— countries that had similar per capita income levels to that of Sri Lanka in the 1950s. The author focuses on five core themes: - Economic development since Independence - The debate on economic liberalisation - Macroeconomic management - Sectoral policy - Employment and poverty

The State of Food and Agriculture 2021
Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9251343292
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 182
Book Description
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerability of agrifood systems to shocks and stresses and led to increased global food insecurity and malnutrition. Action is needed to make agrifood systems more resilient, efficient, sustainable and inclusive. The State of Food and Agriculture 2021 presents country-level indicators of the resilience of agrifood systems. The indicators measure the robustness of primary production and food availability, as well as physical and economic access to food. They can thus help assess the capacity of national agrifood systems to absorb shocks and stresses, a key aspect of resilience. The report analyses the vulnerabilities of food supply chains and how rural households cope with risks and shocks. It discusses options to minimize trade-offs that building resilience may have with efficiency and inclusivity. The aim is to offer guidance on policies to enhance food supply chain resilience, support livelihoods in the agrifood system and, in the face of disruption, ensure sustainable access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to all.
