Book Description
EVERY CAREER COMES with its quirks, nuances, and pet peeves. In the human resources (HR) field, I believe this also holds true. Whenever I've brought up human resources to close friends and colleagues, there's usually a question that eventually arises: What do people in HR do all day anyway? As an HR professional, I'm sure you've heard this quite a few times throughout your career. Maybe the first couple of times you laughed it off, but now, five or ten years later, the joke's gotten old. HR is a product of the human relations movement of the early 20th century, when researchers began documenting ways of creating business value through the strategic management of the workforce. The function was initially transactional work, such as payroll and benefits administration, but due to the outsourcing of jobs and work functions that could be successfully managed offsite, transactional services were no longer an essential function of the HR Professional. The shift was now on to Transformation, transforming the functions of HR to strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial/labor relations, diversity and inclusion. Still, people ask because they don't really know, do they? They believe HR only hires and terminates and assigns starting salaries and occasionally attempts to mediate the interoffice conflict. The most obvious duties of Human Resource Professionals are a valuable part of any organization. I'm talking about recruitment. Every company needs someone skilled at selecting the most efficient and talented worker for the job.
