Human Dignity, Education, and Political Society

Human Dignity, Education, and Political Society PDF Author: James Greenaway
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1793611017
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
A life of liberty and responsibility does not just happen, but requires a particular kind of education, one that aims at both a growth of the human soul and an enrichment of political society in justice and the common good. This we call a liberal education. Forgetfulness of liberty is also a forgetfulness of the multi-dimensional nature of the human person, and a diminution of political life. Keeping in mind what can be lost when liberal education is lost, this volume makes the case for recovering what is perennially noble and good in the liberal arts, and why the liberal arts always have a role to play in human flourishing. Each of the authors herein focuses on the connection of three primary themes: human dignity, liberal education, and political society. Intentionally rooted in the hub that joins the three themes, each author seeks to unfold the contemporary significance of that hub. As a whole, the volume explores how the three themes are crucial to each other: how they illuminate each other, how they need each other, and how the loss of one jeopardizes the wellbeing of the others. In individual chapters, the authors engage various relevant aspects of liberal education. As a result, the volume is organized into three parts: Liberal Education and a Life Well Lived; Thinkers on Dignity and Education in History; Contemporary Topics in Dignity and Education. As education is increasingly channeled into an ever more narrow focus on technical specialization, and measured against professional success, students themselves face a maelstrom of campus politics and competing political orthodoxies. These are among the issues that tend to militate against the operative liberty of the student to think and to speak as a person. This edited collection is offered as an invitation to think again about the liberal arts in order to recover the meaning of education as the authentic pursuit of the good life or eudemonia.

Integrating Political Science, Education, and Public Policy

Integrating Political Science, Education, and Public Policy PDF Author: Russell Francis Farnen
Publisher: Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
This volume is a collection of ideas of the past, present and future interrelationships among political science, education, socialization and public policy analysis, using both American and international perspectives and research findings. In addition to a thorough discussion of political socialization findings in a cross-national context, this book also uses a taxonomic approach in conceptualizing U.S. civic education during the 1960s and 1970s, with an update on the state of U.S. citizenship education in the 1980s. What is proposed here is a practical new model for organizing our political education curricula; one which is analytical, allows for a dynamic synthesis and stresses the importance of active decision-making and policy analysis as key elements in participatory democracy and citizenship education. Concluding recommendations, comments, interpretations and challenges to political educators and researchers complete this unique theoretical and empirical approach to political education.

Education for Democracy

Education for Democracy PDF Author: Steven P. Camicia
Publisher: IAP
ISBN: 1648023142
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 131

Book Description
This book presents a vision of education for democracy built around promoting equity and social justice. In doing so, Camicia and Knowles challenge many of the common perspectives of democratic education, deliberation, and the common good. The authors have published widely on the topic of education for democracy. This book builds upon their work to assist practicing teachers, teacher educators, graduate students, and educational researchers in understanding the background of education for democracy, as well as new directions for the field. While one of the primary goals of public schools is to teach students how to build better communities, this goal is increasingly difficult given the degree of political polarization within societies. Recent events provide no shortage of challenges to democracy in the United States and beyond. Utilizing theory and research, Camicia and Knowles promote instructional methods that are responsive to changing cultural and political contexts. There is an increasing need to rethink democratic principles and how these principles might be supported in classrooms in order to teach for social justice. This requires a move away from often stated idealistic notions of deliberative democracy, toward a perspective of education for democracy that incorporates aspects of identity, interests, and inequitable power relations within society.
