They believe far ther that the phenomena above alluded to, and which human art can exhibit with highest beauty, or with awfui intensity, are produced by the motion of other affections of that uid, as the sensation of sound in all its varieties is produced in the delicate structure of the ear by a certain motion in the air, or in any other body, having communication with the ear; or as the sensation ofjar is perceived by a hand held to one end of a log of wood when a blow is given to the other end. Some philosophers again suppose that the causes of the phenomena are material particles projected through space, somewhat as sand might be scattered by an explosion, and which particles are pre sent only when the e ects are apparent. Some combine these two hypotheses. And some hold all the phenomena of heat to be mere motions in the common matter of the bodies in which the heat exists. Excerpt from Elements of Physical Manipulation, Vol. 2 Since the publication of the first Volume of this work, its scope has been greatly enlarged. It is now made to include, not only Physics proper, but several kindred. Branches, and aims to describe the principal methods of experiment with which every physicist should be familiar. As in the first volume, each Experiment is divided into two parts, a description of the Apparatus, intended mainly for the instructor, and the details of the Experiment, for the student. The subject of Electricity is perhaps better adapted than any other to the laboratory system, and a large amount of space is therefore devoted to it. Heat follows, not being introduced earlier on account of its difficulty, The student may thus first acquire the requisite skill, arid this subject then furnishes an excellent test of his proficiency. To attain accurate results, not only is great care needed, but very carefully constructed apparatus, and numer ous precautions must be taken, and corrections applied. It was therefore deemed better to select simple and inexpensive forms of apparatus which should show the student the principles involved, although not capable of giving very accurate results.
