It is the aim of the text to combine experimental and descriptive instruction in order that both may be better understood. The authors have sought throughout this book to keep constantly before the pupils things and phenomena which they can see and observe. Plain, logical, and accurate statements of fact and explanations have been sought. Formulated statements of definitions and principles relating to the subject have been brought out, and as far as practicable, the application has been shown and illustrated. It has not been the intention to produce a complete work on any particular phase of the subject, but such an elementary treatment of first principles as it is hoped will prove helpful and welcome. Most of the apparatus used in the work can be made at home, and will be a means of keeping interested many a boy who otherwise might not be. Excerpt from Text-Book of Physics: Largely Experimental; Including the Harvard College "Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Physics" The laboratory Exercises of the book are, save in a few unimportant particulars identical with those given in the Harvard Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Phys ics, as revised in 1903. The second edition of the book, issued in 1897, was divided into a First Part and a Second Part, the former intended for pupils a year or two younger than those tak ing the latter; and certain subjects, Liquids and Gases, Composition and Resolution of Forces, Gravity and Centre of Gravity, begun in the First Part were taken up again, for more thorough treatment, in the Second Part. The present edition, the third, abolishes this dis continuity and puts the substance of Chapters XIV, XV, and XVI of the second edition into the early part, thus shortening and simplifying the book. On the other hand, the Pendulum is put farther on, into connection with Mo mentum, etc. This rearrangement involves a renumbering of some of the Exercises, which are, for the most part, not greatly changed in their latest rev1s1on.
