British pianist and teacher Tobias Matthay (1858-1945) believed that science could unlock the secrets of artistic success, and thus began a program of musical instruction, theorizing, and writing on piano technique that bespoke his reverence for observation and reasoning in artistic piano performance. The Oxford Handbook of Music and the Middlebrow takes a fresh look at the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century music.
