A partir do advento da Internet e da criacao das bibliotecas virtuais, verificou-se transformacoes na maneira de gerar, organizar e difundir a informacao. Estas transformacoes afetaram diretamente o trabalho do bibliotecario, que viu-se desafiado a adaptar praticas de trabalho ha muito estabelecidas as novidades da informacao virtual. A presente pesquisa permite visualizar o estado da arte da profissao em Santa Catarina diante deste quadro, conhecendo o nivel de interacao do bibliotecario com a rede Internet, identificando as maneiras como este profissional prepara-se para atuar neste mercado virtual e verificando de que forma as tecnologias da informacao tem influenciado a politica de formacao profissional dos cursos de Biblioteconomia oferecidos no Estado. Estes cursos passam por uma revisao curricular, cujas novas propostas contemplam as tecnologias como parte integrante, porem nao prioritaria, do exercicio da profissao. Constatou-se que o estagio atual da atuacao do bibliotecario em Santa Catarina representa uma fase de transicao, de negociacao entre antigos e novos paradigmas, na qual ainda sao muito fortes os papeis desempenhados pelo antigo profissional. A apropriacao social desta tecnologia se da aos poucos, encontrando-se ainda em fase inicial, caracterizada pela utilizacao ainda superficial dos recursos da rede, apresentando casos isolados de participacao mais arrojada na construcao das infovias. Verificou-se a intervencao de outras categorias de profissionais no trabalho de gestao da informacao digital e na criacao de bibliotecas virtuais. Especialmente neste ultimo aspecto (bibliotecas virtuais), percebe-se a ocorrencia do fenomeno da desintermediacao, o que podera resultar no afastamento do bibliotecario do cenario virtual, limitando seu campo de atuacao ao tratamento da informacao nos moldes convencionais.
