Book Description
CE TRAVAIL CONCERNE L'ETUDE DES PREMIERES PHASES DE LA TRANSITION VERS LA TURBULENCE POUR DES ECOULEMENTS DE CONVECTION NATURELLE DANS DES FLUIDES RAYONNANTS. L'ETUDE EST RESTREINTE A DES ECOULEMENTS BIDIMENSIONNELS MAIS L'ASPECT INTEGRAL DES TRANSFERTS RADIATIFS AINSI QUE LES SPECTRES D'ABSORPTION DES GAZ REELS (MODELES CK ET ADF) SONT PRIS EN COMPTE. UNE ETUDE DE STABILITE LINEAIRE PORTANT SUR LE DEMARRAGE DE LA CONVECTION DE RAYLEIGH-BENARD EST MENEE A L'AIDE D'UNE METHODE PSEUDO-SPECTRALE PRENANT EN COMPTE TOUS LES PROCESSUS STABILISATEURS DUS AU RAYONNEMENT. NOUS AVONS PU DETERMINER QUANTITATIVEMENT LE RETARD AU DEMARRAGE DE LA CONVECTION DU AUX TRANSFERTS RADIATIFS DANS DES GAZ REELS. L'EFFET DES TRANSFERTS RADIATIFS SUR LES ECOULEMENTS BIDIMENSIONNELS DE CONVECTION NATURELLE EST ENSUITE ETUDIE NUMERIQUEMENT DANS TROIS GEOMETRIES DIFFERENTES : UNE CAVITE HORIZONTALE ALLONGEE CHAUFFEE PAR LE BAS, UNE CAVITE CARREE CHAUFFEE PAR LE BAS ET AYANT DES PAROIS LATERALES CONDUCTRICES ET UNE CAVITE VERTICALE ALLONGEE CHAUFFEE PAR LES COTES. UN BON ACCORD AVEC LES RESULTATS DE L'ETUDE DE STABILITE LINEAIRE CONCERNANT LE DEMARRAGE DE LA CONVECTION DANS UNE CONFIGURATION DE TYPE RAYLEIGH-BENARD EST OBTENU. LES SIMULATIONS MONTRENT LA TENDANCE DU RAYONNEMENT A AUGMENTER L'INTENSITE DE L'ECOULEMENT LOIN DES SEUILS CRITIQUES ET A AUGMENTER LES TRANSFERTS CONDUCTIFS AU NIVEAU DES FRONTIERES. NOUS AVONS AUSSI PU QUALIFIER L'EFFET DU RAYONNEMENT SUR UN CERTAIN NOMBRE DE REGIMES MULTICELLULAIRES OU OSCILLATOIRES. DANS LE BUT DE VALIDER EXPERIMENTALEMENT LES RESULTATS THEORIQUES, UN MONTAGE OPTIQUE D'INTERFEROMETRIE HOLOGRAPHIQUE AVEC UN FAISCEAU OBJET DE 20 CM DE DIAMETRE A ETE MIS EN UVRE POUR LA MESURE DES CHAMPS DE TEMPERATURE BIDIMENSIONNELS. DES MAQUETTES D'ECOULEMENT CONTROLEES THERMIQUEMENT PAR DES BAINS THERMOSTATES ET POUVANT FONCTIONNER A DES TEMPERATURES ALLANT DE L'AMBIANTE JUSQU'A 500 K ONT ETE REALISEES. LE MONTAGE SERA EXPLOITE DANS LE CADRE DE TRAVAUX FUTURS.

Dew Water

Dew Water PDF Author: Daniel Beysens
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000793915
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 370

Book Description
The world’s ever-increasing need for fresh water has led to the use of non-conventional sources such as rain and fog water collection. Although rain water collection is relatively simple, the supply is often erratic. Passive fog water collection has been used in several parts of the world but is only relevant to certain geographical locations. Dew occurrence, however, is far more widespread, can form in most climates and geographic settings, show high frequency and prevalence throughout the year. During the past 20 years, dew collection has therefore been investigated as a serious supplemental source of fresh water. Dew Water offers a thorough review of dew, its formation characteristics and potential for dew collection, for audiences that include policy-makers, non-governmental organizations involved in development aid and sustainable development, engineers, urban planners, researchers and students. After providing a background on atmospheric water, humid air, and sky and materials emissivity, the book deals with dew formation and its estimation with a focus on the use of meteorological data. Dew measurement techniques are reviewed and discussed as well as dew collection by passive means. Computational fluid dynamics technique is described for better design of dew collectors. Dew quality (chemistry, biology) is assessed in view of potable water quality. Costs and economic aspects are also considered.

Physics on Manifolds

Physics on Manifolds PDF Author: M. Flato
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401119384
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the Colloquium "Analysis, Manifolds and Physics" organized in honour of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat by her friends, collaborators and former students, on June 3, 4 and 5, 1992 in Paris. Its title accurately reflects the domains to which Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat has made essential contributions. Since the rise of General Relativity, the geometry of Manifolds has become a non-trivial part of space-time physics. At the same time, Functional Analysis has been of enormous importance in Quantum Mechanics, and Quantum Field Theory. Its role becomes decisive when one considers the global behaviour of solutions of differential systems on manifolds. In this sense, General Relativity is an exceptional theory in which the solutions of a highly non-linear system of partial differential equations define by themselves the very manifold on which they are supposed to exist. This is why a solution of Einstein's equations cannot be physically interpreted before its global behaviour is known, taking into account the entire hypothetical underlying manifold. In her youth, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat contributed in a spectacular way to this domain stretching between physics and mathematics, when she gave the proof of the existence of solutions to Einstein's equations on differential manifolds of a quite general type. The methods she created have been worked out by the French school of mathematics, principally by Jean Leray. Her first proof of the local existence and uniqueness of solutions of Einstein's equations inspired Jean Leray's theory of general hyperbolic systems.

From Microphysics to Macrophysics

From Microphysics to Macrophysics PDF Author: Roger Balian
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540454802
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 626

Book Description
This popular, often cited text returns in a softcover edition to provide a thorough introduction to statistical physics and thermodynamics, and to exhibit the universal chain of ideas leading from the laws of microphysics to the macroscopic behaviour of matter. A wide range of applications illustrates the concepts, and many exercises reinforce understanding. Volume II applies statistical methods to systems governed by quantum effects, in particular to solid state physics, explaining properties due to the crystal structure or to the lattice excitations or to the electrons. The last chapters are devoted to non-equilibrium processes and to kinetic equations, with many applications included.

An Introduction to Differential Manifolds

An Introduction to Differential Manifolds PDF Author: Jacques Lafontaine
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319207350
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
This book is an introduction to differential manifolds. It gives solid preliminaries for more advanced topics: Riemannian manifolds, differential topology, Lie theory. It presupposes little background: the reader is only expected to master basic differential calculus, and a little point-set topology. The book covers the main topics of differential geometry: manifolds, tangent space, vector fields, differential forms, Lie groups, and a few more sophisticated topics such as de Rham cohomology, degree theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces. Its ambition is to give solid foundations. In particular, the introduction of “abstract” notions such as manifolds or differential forms is motivated via questions and examples from mathematics or theoretical physics. More than 150 exercises, some of them easy and classical, some others more sophisticated, will help the beginner as well as the more expert reader. Solutions are provided for most of them. The book should be of interest to various readers: undergraduate and graduate students for a first contact to differential manifolds, mathematicians from other fields and physicists who wish to acquire some feeling about this beautiful theory. The original French text Introduction aux variétés différentielles has been a best-seller in its category in France for many years. Jacques Lafontaine was successively assistant Professor at Paris Diderot University and Professor at the University of Montpellier, where he is presently emeritus. His main research interests are Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, including some aspects of mathematical relativity. Besides his personal research articles, he was involved in several textbooks and research monographs.

Pages : 529

Book Description
This didactic book presents the main elements of acoustics, aeroacoustics and vibrations. Illustrated with numerous concrete examples linked to solid and fluid continua, Acoustics, Aeroacoustics and Vibrations proposes a selection of applications encountered in the three fields, whether in room acoustics, transport, energy production systems or environmental problems. Theoretical approaches enable us to analyze the different processes in play. Typical results, mostly from numerical simulations, are used to illustrate the main phenomena (fluid acoustics, radiation, diffraction, vibroacoustics, etc.).

Four Laws That Drive the Universe

Four Laws That Drive the Universe PDF Author: Peter Atkins
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191647632
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
The laws of thermodynamics drive everything that happens in the universe. From the sudden expansion of a cloud of gas to the cooling of hot metal, and from the unfurling of a leaf to the course of life itself - everything is directed and constrained by four simple laws. They establish fundamental concepts such as temperature and heat, and reveal the arrow of time and even the nature of energy itself. Peter Atkins' powerful and compelling introduction explains what the laws are and how they work, using accessible language and virtually no mathematics. Guiding the reader from the Zeroth Law to the Third Law, he introduces the fascinating concept of entropy, and how it not only explains why your desk tends to get messier, but also how its unstoppable rise constitutes the engine of the universe.
