Behavioral pharmacology represents a relatively recent scientific enterprise, the development of which can be followed by plotting the publication of major conceptual papers, review articles, and books. Dews (1955), Sidman (1955), and Brady (1956) published some of the first methodologically significant papers, changing the way both psychologists and pharmacologists viewed the analysis of the behavioral actions of drugs. Dews and Morse (1961), Cook and Kelleher (1963), Gollub and Brady (1965), and Weiss and Laties (1969) kept the field abreast of major developments in the study of behavioral mechanisms of drug action. In 1968, the first textbook in the field was published (Thompson and Schuster), followed by a book of readings covering the preceding 15 years of the field (Thompson, Pickens, and Meisch, 1970). The first attempt to outline a set of generalizations concerning behavioral mechanisms of drug actions was puhlished in 1968 by Kelleher and Morse. As behavioral pharmacology developed, it became clear that demonstrations that drugs affect hehavior were relatively uninteresting. It was the mechanisms by which these effects are hrought about that was of concern. While other aspects of pharmacology have been concerned with biochemical, physiological, and in some cases biophysical accounts of drug actions, behavioral pharmacology has dealt with behavioral mechanisms . . . that is, "any verifiable description of a drug's effects which can he shown to uniquely covary with a specific measured 'response'. Generally, this relation can be subsumed under some more general set of relations or principles" (Thompson, Pickens, and Meisch, 1970, p. I).

The first six volumes of the Handbook reviewed basic neuropharmacology, drawing on expertise in biochemistry, pharmacology and electrophysiology. The next three volumes focus attention on the functional importance of these basic neuropharmacological mechanisms for normal behavior. In order to study this interface in the intact functioning organism, appropriate methods for describing and quantifying behavior must be developed. The past twenty years have witnessed a revolution in the study of behavior which has taken us away from the often fruitless theoretical arguments to descriptive behaviorism. Technical achievements in the design of apparatus and the recording of behavior played an important role in these and the resultant behavioral methods have been accepted and developments, found useful in studying the effects of drugs. The development of psycho pharmacology as a discipline owes as much to these behavioral methods as it does to the basic neuropharmacological techniques pioneered for in vitro studies. In the first section of Volume 7, an effort has been made to provide reviews both of theory and practice in behavioral science. Milner's chapter deals with the concept of motivation in a theoretical framework. By contrast, the chapters by Morse et ai. and Dews and DeWeese provide a more descriptive view of the various ways in which aversive stimuli control behavior and the importance of schedules of reinforcement in determining the profile of responding in the animal. The equal importance of observational behav ioral methods is well illustrated by Mackintosh et ai.

Hallucinations, a natural phenomenon as old as mankind, have a surprisingly wide range. They appear under the most diversified conditions, in the "normal" psyche as well as in severe chronic mental derangement. As a symptom, hallucinations are a potential part of a variety of pathological conditions in almost all kinds of psychotic behavior. In addition, lately, various psychological and sociological circumstances seem to favor widespread use and abuse of hallucinogens, substances able to produce hallucinations in the normal brain. They not rarely lead to serious psychopatho logy such as toxic, and mobilized or aggravated endogenous psycho ses. While such development adds to our scientific knowledge, it also contributes to our current social troubles. Neurologists and neuro-surgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists and other specialized researchers constantly have been dealing with the phenomenon, its roots and branches, and yet, its primary mechanisms are largely un known. However, investigators of hallucinations now seem to enter common ground on which meaningful discussions and joint approaches become feasible and more promising. We have come a long way from the Latin term "hallucinari", meaning to talk nonsense, to be absent-minded, to the modern con cept of "hallucinations". While the Latin word was descriptive of what may be due to hallucinations, the modern concept defines hal lucinations as subjective experiences that are consequences of men tal processes, sometimes fulfilling a purpose in the individual's mental life.
