Effect of Load Eccentricity and Substructure Deformation on Ultimate Strength of Shuttle Orbiter Thermal Protection System
Effect of Load Eccentricity and Substructure Deformation on Ultimate Strength of Shuttle Orbiter Thermal Protection System

Pages : 34
Book Description
The effect of load eccentricity and substructure deformation on the ultimate strength and stress displacement properties of the shuttle orbiter thermal protection system (TPS) was determined. The LI-900 Reusable Surface Insulation (RSI) tiles mounted on the .41 cm thick Strain Isolator Pad (SIP) were investigated. Substructure deformations reduce the ultimate strength of the SIP/tile TPS and increase the scatter in the ultimate strength data. Substructure deformations that occur unsymmetric to the tile can cause the tile to rotate when subjected to a uniform applied load. Load eccentricity reduces SIP/tile TPS ultimate strength and causes tile rotation. Sawyer, J. W. Langley Research Center NASA-TM-83182 RTOP 506-53-53-06...

Lightning Protection of Aircraft
Author: Franklin Fisher
Publisher: CreateSpace
ISBN: 9781478241522
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 564
Book Description
This book is an attempt to present under one cover the current state of knowledge concerning the potential lightning effects on aircraft and that means that are available to designers and operators to protect against these effects. The impetus for writing this book springs from two sources- the increased use of nonmetallic materials in the structure of aircraft and the constant trend toward using electronic equipment to handle flight-critical control and navigation function.

Manufacturing Technology for Aerospace Structural Materials
Author: Flake C Campbell Jr
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080462359
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 617
Book Description
The rapidly-expanding aerospace industry is a prime developer and user of advanced metallic and composite materials in its many products. This book concentrates on the manufacturing technology necessary to fabricate and assemble these materials into useful and effective structural components. Detailed chapters are dedicated to each key metal or alloy used in the industry, including aluminum, magnesium, beryllium, titanium, high strength steels, and superalloys. In addition the book deals with composites, adhesive bonding and presents the essentials of structural assembly. This book will be an important resource for all those involved in aerospace design and construction, materials science and engineering, as well as for metallurgists and those working in related sectors such as the automotive and mass transport industries. Flake Campbell Jr has over thirty seven years experience in the aerospace industry and is currently Senior Technical Fellow at the Boeing Phantom Works in Missouri, USA.* All major aerospace structural materials covered: metals and composites* Focus on details of manufacture and use* Author has huge experience in aerospace industry* A must-have book for materials engineers, design and structural engineers, metallurgical engineers and manufacturers for the aerospace industry
