In the context of cultural and economic globalization, intercultural communication is of central importance for the study of social and educational processes and practices. This volume contains contributions on conceptual issues as well as case studies on intercultural communication and education in Finland. Some of the contributions were first presented at the conference «Enhancing the Visibility and Collaboration of Researchers in Intercultural Communication and Education in Finland» which took place at the University of Turku, Finland, in October 2004. The other collected articles offer various contrasting perspectives on issues related to interculturality. Dans le contexte de la mondialisation culturelle et économique, la recherche en communication interculturelle est d'une importance capitale pour l'étude des pratiques et des processus sociaux et éducatifs. Le terme “Service” a orienté les travaux de recherche et de formation lors du XIIIème Congrès de l'Association Internationale de Formation et de Recherche en Education Familiale (AIFREF). From an international, research-led perspective, this book explores how languages are foregrounded in education in different countries and educational sectors, and among different groups of people in contexts of migration. It is concerned with the movement of people and their languages as they migrate across borders, and as languages—and their speakers—are under threat, pressure and pain, even to the point of being silenced. The contributors explore the multilingual possibilities and opportunities that these situations present. For example: where children’s education is neglected because of displacement or exclusion; or in classrooms where teachers and educational leaders seek to meet the needs of all learners, including those who are new citizens, refugees, or asylum seekers. Together, the findings and conclusions emerging from these studies open up a timely space for interdisciplinary, inter-practitioner, and comparative researcher dialogue concerning languages and intercultural education in times of migration.
