Realist Ecstasy

Realist Ecstasy PDF Author: Lindsay V. Reckson
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 1479868922
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
Honorable Mention, Barnard Hewitt Award from the American Society for Theater Research Explores the intersection and history of American literary realism and the performance of spiritual and racial embodiment. Recovering a series of ecstatic performances in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American realism, Realist Ecstasy travels from camp meetings to Native American ghost dances to storefront church revivals to explore realism’s relationship to spiritual experience. In her approach to realism as both an unruly archive of performance and a wide-ranging repertoire of media practices—including literature, photography, audio recording, and early film—Lindsay V. Reckson argues that the real was repetitively enacted and reenacted through bodily practice. Realist Ecstasy demonstrates how the realist imagining of possessed bodies helped construct and naturalize racial difference, while excavating the complex, shifting, and dynamic possibilities embedded in ecstatic performance: its production of new and immanent forms of being beside. Across her readings of Stephen Crane, James Weldon Johnson, and Nella Larsen, among others, Reckson triangulates secularism, realism, and racial formation in the post-Reconstruction moment. Realist Ecstasy shows how post-Reconstruction realist texts mobilized gestures—especially the gestures associated with religious ecstasy—to racialize secularism itself. Reckson offers us a distinctly new vision of American realism as a performative practice, a sustained account of how performance lives in and through literary archives, and a rich sense of how closely secularization and racialization were linked in Jim Crow America.

Holding Change

Holding Change PDF Author: adrienne maree brown
Publisher: AK Press
ISBN: 1849354197
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 115

Book Description
Facilitation and mediation are important skills in our highly organized world. Holding Change is a guide for attending to both in ways that align with nature, with pleasure, with our best imaginings of our future. It provides lessons for generating the ease necessary to move through life’s inevitable struggles and for practicing the art of holding others without losing ourselves. Black feminists have evolved this wisdom, but it can serve anyone working to create change, individually, interpersonally, and within our organizations. The majority of the book is sourced from brown’s twenty-plus years of facilitation and mediation work, with additional wisdom from a selection of living Black feminist facilitators and mediators.

Love, Death, and Transience:

Love, Death, and Transience: PDF Author: Byron Renz
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1514401118
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
A collage in art is something like a mosaic. It takes picture fragments which have a certain meaning in themselves and juxtaposes them with other picture fragments that convey a somewhat different, but related, idea. When viewed as a collective whole, the sub-themes in each picture blend together to create a large unified master theme. This book might be described as a literary collage. The theme in each essay conveys a part of the life of our society and political landscape. The essays were written to accompany e-mail greetings for my four daughters and several of my friends at the four seasonal turning points of the year, experienced similarly at the middle latitudesthe two equinoxes and two solstices. Now, some nine years after starting the practice in 2006, a number of essays have accumulatedsome short and personal and others longer and impersonal. The essays usually make some point about the world that we live infrom the way that words convey meaning, to phenomena of the mind, to political issues of the day. The purpose of this book is to stimulate thought and to encourage discussion.

Avant-garde Canadian Literature

Avant-garde Canadian Literature PDF Author: Gregory Brian Betts
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442643773
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
In Avant-Garde Canadian Literature, Gregory Betts draws attention to the fact that the avant-garde has had a presence in Canada long before the country's literary histories have recognized, and that the radicalism of avant-garde art has been sabotaged by pedestrian terms of engagement by the Canadian media, the public, and the literary critics. This book presents a rich body of evidence to illustrate the extent to which Canadians have been producing avant-garde art since the start of the twentieth century. Betts explores the radical literary ambitions and achievements of three different nodes of avant-garde literary activity: mystical revolutionaries from the 1910s to the 1930s; Surrealists/Automatists from the 1920s to the 1960s; and Canadian Vorticists from the 1920s to the 1970s. Avant-Garde Canadian Literature offers an entrance into the vocabulary of the ongoing and primarily international debate surrounding the idea of avant-gardism, providing readers with a functional vocabulary for discussing some of the most hermetic and yet energetic literature ever produced in this country.
