The Making of the Magdalen

The Making of the Magdalen PDF Author: Katherine Ludwig Jansen
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 9780691089874
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
"Best known during the Middle Ages as the prostitute who became a faithful follower of Christ, Mary Magdalen was the most beloved female saint after the Virgin Mary. Why the Magdalen became so popular, what meanings she conveyed, and how her story evolved over the centuries are the focus of this compelling exploration of late medieval religious culture." "Through the lens of medieval preaching, as well as the responses of those who heard the sermons preached, Katherine Jansen brings to light previously unpublished sermons to show how and why the mendicant friars transformed Mary Magdalen, a shadowy gospel figure, into an emblem of action and contemplation, a symbol of vanity and lust, a model of perfect penance, and the embodiment of hope and salvation. Jansen also draws on a variety of historical sources - from saints' lives to patronage patterns - to examine the laity's reception of the saint. She reveals that the laity's devotion to Mary Magdalen departed in significant ways from the friars' image of the saint, signaling a major development in popular religious practice and personal piety." "The making of the Magdalen will appeal to readers of medieval history and religion, to those with an interest in the study of women, sexuality, and gender, and to those who are interested in saints throughout the ages."--Jacket.

Thinking with Irigaray

Thinking with Irigaray PDF Author: Mary C. Rawlinson
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 1438439180
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 313

Book Description
Thinking with Irigaray takes up Irigaray's challenge to think beyond the androcentric, one-subject culture, identifying much that is useful and illuminative in Irigaray's work while also questioning some of her assumptions and claims. Some contributors reject outright her prescriptions for changing our culture, others suggest that her prescriptions are inconsistent with the basic ethical concerns of her project, and still others attempt to identify blind spots in her work. By confronting and challenging the mechanisms of masculine domination Irigaray has identified and applying these insights to a wide range of practical and contemporary concerns, including popular media representations of women's sexuality, feminist practice in the arts, political resistance, and yoga, the contributors demonstrate the unique potential of Irigaray's thought within feminist philosophy and gender studies.

Returning to Irigaray

Returning to Irigaray PDF Author: Maria Cimitile
Publisher: SUNY Press
ISBN: 0791480860
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
Luce Irigaray is one of the most influential philosophers and theorists in the field of feminist thought, and her work is considered both revolutionary and controversial. This volume offers the first critical assessment of the relation of her early critical and poetic writings to her later political and practical philosophy. Contributors examine how the question of sexual difference has unfolded in a wealth of different directions in Irigaray's later work, focusing on the areas of nature and technology, social and political theory and praxis, ethics, psychoanalysis, and phenomenology. They also address whether there has been a radical conceptual "turn" in Irigaray's thought by exploring the idea of a "turn" as a return to themes that have concerned her all along. The essays contend that Irigaray's writings should be read, criticized, or promoted within the context of her overall philosophical project.

Pastoral Care and Monasticism in Latin Christianity and Japanese Buddhism (ca. 800-1650)

Pastoral Care and Monasticism in Latin Christianity and Japanese Buddhism (ca. 800-1650) PDF Author: Toshio Ohnuki, Gert Melville, Yuichi Akae, Kazuhisa Takeda
Publisher: LIT Verlag Münster
ISBN: 3643154976
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
Monasticism has a special position in the history of pastoral care. It produced innovations in various aspects of pastoral care despite, or more precisely, because of its isolation in legal or social terms from the secular world. The thirteen papers contained in this volume will reveal that there was a great variety in the ways pastoral care continued to be practised by monasticism, depending on time, space, and the nature of each religious order. Adopting a comparative approach, their historical and geographical range of investigation is not limited to medieval Europe but expands to the Americas and even to Japan in the early Modern Age. This volume bases on a conference held on 1 and 2 March 2019 at Okayama University, Japan, as part of the close collaboration between a Japanese research group on Christian/Buddhist religious movements and the Research Project "Monasteries in the High Middle Ages: Innovation Laboratories for European Life Designs and Regulatory Models" of the Saxon and the Heidelberg Academies of Sciences and Humanities, as well as the Research Center for Comparative History of Religious Orders (FOVOG, Dresden).
