Book Description
In "Earth Pilgrim," Satish Kumar draws on his personal experience as well as his understanding of the spiritual traditions of both East and West. The book takes the form of conversations between Satish and others about the inner and outer aspects of pilgrimage: to be a pilgrim is to be on a path of adventure, to move out of our comfort zones, to let go of our prejudices and preconditioning, and to make strides toward the unknown. Satish Kumar has been a pilgrim ever since, at the age of eight, he joined the brotherhood of wandering Jain monks in his native India. Later he walked the length and breadth of India with Gandhi's successor Vinoba Bhave, persuading landowners to donate a portion of their lands to the poor. In the 1960s he made an 8,000-mile pilgrimage for peace, which included walking from India over the Himalayas to Paris via Moscow. Satish believes that at this stage of human history we now need a new kind of pilgrim, unattached to any form of dogma: Earth pilgrims who are concerned with this world, not the next, and who are seeking a deep commitment to life in the here and now, upon this Earth, in this world.

Earth, Our Original Monastery

Earth, Our Original Monastery PDF Author: Christine Valters Paintner
Publisher: Ave Maria Press
ISBN: 1932057218
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 160

Book Description
How can we meet God in our everyday lives? In Earth, Our Original Monastery, Christine Valters Paintner, bestselling author and online abbess for Abbey of the Arts, shares how living contemplatively with an appreciation for the natural world can make you more aware of the presence of God in every aspect of your life. She explores monks, mystics, and saints who have experienced the goodness of the Divine in nature and invites you to find solace and spiritual revelation in the wonder of God’s creation. The purpose of contemplative living, Christine Valters Paintner suggests, is to allow you to integrate the pieces of your life within yourself, in your community, and in the world around you. When you pay attention to each moment, you nurture your ability to see God’s actions in those moments. In Earth, Our Original Monastery, Paintner invites you to begin the journey of contemplative living by focusing on the image of the earth as your original monastery—the place where you learn your most fundamental prayers, participate in each day’s liturgy of praise, and experience the wisdom of the seasons. Paintner provides seven ways of seeing the earth in light of faith and pairs each one with a practical invitation to a practice. These include: the earth as original cathedral—where you first learn to worship and feel God’s presence around us, paired with the practice of stability the earth as original saints—plants and animals live their calling without trying to be something they’re not and inspire you to do the same, paired with the practice of gratitude the earth as original icon—nature can serve as a window to the holy in the same way that icons do, paired with the practice of lament As you explore what these connections between the earth and faith mean for how to see God in the world around you, you can also look at saints and mystics who experienced nature and the flow of the divine in similar ways.

Pilgrim on the Great Bird Continent

Pilgrim on the Great Bird Continent PDF Author: Lyanda Lynn Haupt
Publisher: Little Brown
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
Charles Darwin was a bumbling neophyte naturalist when he boarded the Beagle in 1831. Through the five years that followed, as the ship hugged the coastline of South America, Darwin found himself crawling through waist-deep mud, climbing towerlike trees in the rainforest, and scaling craggy Patagonian cliffs as he collected specimens and closely observed the relationship between the creatures he stalked and the astonishing, utterly unfamiliar landscapes where he found them. What happened to Darwin? That's the question Lyanda Lynn Haupt compellingly explores in a narrative that puts us inside the young Darwin's shoes - and brings nose to nose with dung beetles, ostriches, and all form of wild creatures. By mining Darwin's lesser-known works - diaries, correspondence, his ornithological journals, unruly little pocket notebooks - Haupt illuminates the process that shaped Darwin's vision of the workings of nature. Her book not only chronicles Darwin's transformation from uncertain amateur to genius but reminds us how and why, in our own world as well as Darwin's, attention to small things can make a big difference.
