Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Man and His Forerunners: A Short Study of the Human Species Living and Extinct N offering this book at the present time it is per I haps advisable to say that it has not been inspired by recent events. I had had the project in mind for more than fifteen years and the accumulated notes began to take their present form in the summer of 1912. When war broke out at the beginning of August 1914 the much-revised manuscript of the first six chapters had already been typed. The seventh chapter was written and the book finished during the next seven weeks on the lines originally laid down. The typescript was then laid aside for fifteen months. Revising it, after this interval, I have not avoided reference to recent events; but I have made no em deavour to rewrite the book as a 'war-book.' Rethinking Human Evolution

Rethinking Human Evolution PDF Author: Jeffrey H. Schwartz
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262546744
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
Contributors from a range of disciplines consider the disconnect between human evolutionary studies and the rest of evolutionary biology. The study of human evolution often seems to rely on scenarios and received wisdom rather than theory and methodology, with each new fossil or molecular analysis interpreted as supporting evidence for the presumed lineage of human ancestry. We might wonder why we should pursue new inquiries if we already know the story. Is paleoanthropology an evolutionary science? Are analyses of human evolution biological? In this volume, contributors from disciplines that range from paleoanthropology to philosophy of science consider the disconnect between human evolutionary studies and the rest of evolutionary biology. All of the contributors reflect on their own research and its disciplinary context, considering how their fields of inquiry can move forward in new ways. The goal is to encourage a more multifaceted intellectual environment for the understanding of human evolution. Topics discussed include paleoanthropology's history of procedural idiosyncrasies; the role of mind and society in our evolutionary past; humans as large mammals rather than a special case; genomic analyses; computational approaches to phylogenetic reconstruction; descriptive morphology versus morphometrics; and integrating insights from archaeology into the interpretation of human fossils. Contributors Markus Bastir, Fred L. Bookstein, Claudine Cohen, Richard G. Delisle, Robin Dennell, Rob DeSalle, John de Vos, Emma M. Finestone, Huw S. Groucutt, Gabriele A. Theories of Human Evolution

Theories of Human Evolution PDF Author: Peter J. Bowler
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
The question of human origin has always been disputed by evolution theorists. This book provides a comprehensive survey of the debates over human evolution from the time of Darwin to the 1940s. Part 1 discusses the early controversies, noting that they focused on philosophical issues rather than causes or details of the evolutionary process. A framework for the debate is outlined, considering evolution theory with race, culture and the progress of humankind. Part 2 describes various theories including the Neanderthal-Phase theory, the Presapiens theory, the Tarsioid theory, and Polytypic theories. Part 3 of the book deals with interpretations of the causes of human evolution. Arguments are presented which relate to the factors of brain expansion, upright posture and environment in the evolutionary process. Trends in human evolution are discussed, including convergence, Lamarckism, nonadaptive trends, and orthogenesis. The book ends with a review of arguments concerning Broom's (1933) question: The coming of man--was it accident or design? An extensive listing of references is provided in a bibliography and note section. (TW)

Psychoanalytic Therapy and the Gay Man

Psychoanalytic Therapy and the Gay Man PDF Author: Jack Drescher
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131777132X
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
Do the conventional insights of depth psychology have anything to offer the gay patient? Can contemporary psychoanalytic theory be used to make sense of gay identities in ways that are helpful rather than hurtful, respectful rather than retraumatizing? In Psychoanalytic Therapy and the Gay Man Jack Drescher addresses these very questions as he outlines a therapeutic approach to issues of sexual identity that is informed by traditional therapeutic goals (such as psychological integration and more authentic living) while still respecting, even honoring, variations in sexual orientation. Drescher's exploration of the subjectivities of gay men in psychoanalytic psychotherapy is more than a long-overdue corrective to the inadequate and often pathologizing tomes of traditional psychoanalytic writers. It is a vitally human testament to the richly varied inner experiences of gay men. Drescher does not assume that sexual orientation is the entire or even major focus of intensive psychotherapy. But he does argue, passionately and convincingly, that issues of sexual identity - which encompass a spectrum of possibilities for any gay man - must be addressed in an atmosphere of honest encounter that allows not only for exploration of conflict and dissociation but also for restitutive confirmation of the patient's right to be himself. Through its abundance of first-person testimony from both clinical and literary sources, Psychoanalytic Therapy and the Gay Man provides the reader with an unforgettable grasp of what it is like to discover that one is gay in our society and then to find the courage and humanity to live with that knowledge. Any mental health professional - regardless of his or her sexual orientation - who wishes to deal therapeutically with gay men will find Drescher's work indispensable. But it will also be compelling reading for anyone seeking psychological insight into gay men's lives and concerns.
