Book Description
This collection of early inscription records of the Fairfield Reformed Church Cemetery includes inscriptions from unpublished reports dated 1895 and 1904 as well as other sources. The interments are conveniently listed in alphabetical order by last name. In addition to vital records there are human interest items, some relevant wills and census information. There are deaths caused by a barn fire, a couple killed in a carriage accident and a pastor thrown from his horse. Many early records are said to have been lost in fires. To provide some additional history of the church a record of the pastor up to 1902 is included. Personal data on these gentlemen includes a pastor who was active in the Revolutionary War and was once a prisoner of war at the Old Sugar House in New York. Also included is information about two men who served in the War of 1812 and twenty men who served in the Civil War some of whom were interred after 1904. The Fairfield Reformed Church, Fairfield, Essex County, New Jersey is listed in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places. (NR Ref. #75001134) Fairfield was early known as Gansegat and Horseneck; then, Caldwell Township in 1798 and renamed as Fairfield Township in 1964.

The Archaeology of the Early Medieval Celtic Churches: No. 29

The Archaeology of the Early Medieval Celtic Churches: No. 29 PDF Author: Nancy Edwards
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351546570
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 753

Book Description
This volume focuses on new research on the archaeology of the early medieval Celtic churches c AD 400-1100 in Wales, Ireland, Scotland, south-west Britain and Brittany. The 21 papers use a variety of approaches to explore and analyse the archaeological evidence for the origins and development of the Church in these areas. The results of a recent multi-disciplinary research project to identify the archaeology of the early medieval church in different regions of Wales are considered alongside other new research and the discoveries made in excavations in both Wales and beyond. The papers reveal not only aspects of the archaeology of ecclesiastical landscapes with their monasteries, churches and cemeteries, but also special graves, relics, craftworking and the economy enabling both comparisons and contrasts. They likewise engage with ongoing debates concerning interpretation: historiography and the concept of the Celtic Church, conversion to Christianity, Christianization of the landscape and the changing functions and inter-relationships of sites, the development of saints cults, sacred space and pilgrimage landscapes and the origins of the monastic town .

Book Description
Excerpt from Inscriptions From the Two Ancient Cemeteries of Palmer, Mass With thy rude ploughshare, Death turn up the sod, And spread the furrow for the seed we sow; This is the field and acre of our God, This is the place where human harvests grow. One of the sad necessities connected with the settling of every town is the earlv setting apart of the sacred acre, where, cooner or later, the great majority must find rest after the work of life is done. And so it happened here, for on the'26th of April, 1729, death claimed Moses, the son of the pioneer John King, who first consecrated the ground set apart by the free con sent of those who settled early in the precincts of our village, as we find no account of any action on the part Olf the town con nected with it. No stone marks the place of the first burial, not of many others who soon followed. The oldest headstone in the cemetery bears this inscription: Here lies the body of Jerusha, (laughter of Capt. Nathaniel Vose of Milton, and wife of Andrew Mackee, who died Mav 22, 1732, 30 years of age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
