Ce travail démontre l'existence souvent évoquée d'un " champ " des associations qui s'occupent d'environnement (AOE). Ce champ, historiquement construit, ne se résume pas simplement à l'opposition entre " environnementalistes " d'une part et " naturalistes " d'autre part. Il s'organise de manière complexe autour d'enjeux tout à la fois sociaux et environnementaux, défendus par des agents aux positions, trajectoires, et représentations sociales différenciées et sociologiquement ancrées, de ce qu'est l'" environnement " et la bonne façon de le défendre. Pour le montrer, le premier chapitre dresse tout d'abord les contours du champ et la manière de l'appréhender. Le second chapitre centre ensuite son analyse sur le processus de construction du champ et sa structure actuelle. Le troisième chapitre met quant à lui l'accent sur les oppositions autour de l'enjeu " environnement " et en quoi celles-ci sont liées à un habitus de classe environnemental différencié. Le quatrième chapitre traite de la formation de cet habitus de classe. Le cinquième chapitre analyse le profil sociologique des agents du champ des AOE et les enjeux sociaux qu'ils y engagent respectivement. Le dernier chapitre enfin, aborde les stratégies - y compris en terme de réseau associatif - mises en place pour défendre sa vision de l'environnement et de la bonne façon de le défendre à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur du champ.
