Book Description
The principal concern of this book (expounded in the first chapter) is to chart the development of literary awareness amongst poets of the later Middle Ages whose marked stance of professional independence led them increasingly to distinguish between their implied literary selves and the first-person speakers of their texts. Four chapters examine, by means of close stylistic analysis, the implications of such detachment taken as a model of binary opposition for the elaboration of the first-person speaker. Thus, in the case of Machaut, the essential distinction is between the first person and the second or third - the 'I' and the Other; with Froissart, between the 'I' of the present and the 'I' of the past; with Deschamps, between the internal 'I' of the poet and a vast array of external personae; with Christine de Pizan between the blueprint of a persona evolved by the poet for her internal 'I' and the transformations implied by its imposition on external personae. The final chapter, on the poetics of debate, explores the means by which the 'I' may be divided in order to arrive at an objective knowledge of both its own nature and of external truths, the ideal expression of which is the written record of the debate itself. It is the primacy of the Book as an autonomous entity which, ultimately, exercises the most far- reaching influence on the development of the poetic 'I' in this period.

Random Operators
Author: Michael Aizenman
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 1470419130
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 343
Book Description
This book provides an introduction to the mathematical theory of disorder effects on quantum spectra and dynamics. Topics covered range from the basic theory of spectra and dynamics of self-adjoint operators through Anderson localization--presented here via the fractional moment method, up to recent results on resonant delocalization. The subject's multifaceted presentation is organized into seventeen chapters, each focused on either a specific mathematical topic or on a demonstration of the theory's relevance to physics, e.g., its implications for the quantum Hall effect. The mathematical chapters include general relations of quantum spectra and dynamics, ergodicity and its implications, methods for establishing spectral and dynamical localization regimes, applications and properties of the Green function, its relation to the eigenfunction correlator, fractional moments of Herglotz-Pick functions, the phase diagram for tree graph operators, resonant delocalization, the spectral statistics conjecture, and related results. The text incorporates notes from courses that were presented at the authors' respective institutions and attended by graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

Ibuanyidanda (complementary Reflection) and Some Basic Philosophical Problems in Africa Today
Author: Innocent Asouzu
Publisher: LIT Verlag Münster
ISBN: 3643903162
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 121
Book Description
This book gives an insightful account of how some fundamental phenomena and mechanisms control human consciousness, impacting the way we think, will, and act. The book identifies these phenomena and mechanisms as ihe mkpuchi anya, the super-maxim, and the inherently tension-laden ambivalent character of our experience of reality. It re-examines fundamental problems of philosophy from the perspective of ibuanyidanda (complementary reflection) and how the problems reappear in the way philosophy is conducted in Africa today. (Series: Studies in African Philosophy - Vol. 8)

The Impacts of COVID-19 on Political Dynamics, Social Inequality, and the Wellbeing of Americans
Author: Geoffrey L. Wood
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1666930180
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 161
Book Description
The Impacts of COVID-19 on Political Dynamics, Social Inequality, and the Wellbeing of Americans examines the impacts of COVID-19 on political inequality, social inequality, and life changes of Americans. Topics include impacts of COVID-19 on the poor, differences in media responses to previous influenza versus COVID-19 pandemics, the intersection of race, class, and gender specific to this event, gender and changes in occupational loss, specific impacts on college students, and ways in which technological changes integrated with COVID-19. The contributors argue that COVID-19 made political and social inequality worse and affected various groups of Americans differently. This edited volume discusses mechanisms and rationales for why this is the case and offers potential solutions to instances of accelerating inequities in America.

Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems
Author: Kurt Jensen
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540247300
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 622
Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems (TACAS 2004). TACAS 2004 took place in Barcelona, Spain, from March 29th to April 2nd, as part of the 7th European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS 2004), whose aims, organization, and history are detailed in a foreword by the ETAPS Steering Committee Chair, Jos ́ e Luiz Fiadeiro. TACAS is a forum for researchers, developers, and users interested in ri- rously based tools for the construction and analysis of systems. The conference serves to bridge the gaps between di?erent communities including, but not - mited to, those devoted to formal methods, software and hardware veri?cation, static analysis, programming languages, software engineering, real-time systems, and communication protocols that share common interests in, and techniques for, tool development. In particular, by providing a venue for the discussion of common problems, heuristics, algorithms, data structures, and methodologies, TACAS aims to support researchers in their quest to improve the utility, rel- bility, ?exibility, and e?ciency of tools for building systems. TACASseekstheoreticalpaperswithaclearlinktotoolconstruction, papers describingrelevantalgorithmsandpracticalaspectsoftheirimplementation,- pers giving descriptions of tools and associated methodologies, and case studies with a conceptual message.
