Book Description
In scarcely 200 pages, Professor Kuhns has surveyed the factors that compelled roughly 100,000 emigrants from the Palatinate, Wurtenberg, Zweibrucken, and other principalities in southern Germany to settle in Pennsylvania between 1683 and 1776 and establish a new way of life in their adopted homeland. Most of these immigrants were farmers, and their customs and manners are recounted in an examination of housing, provisions, agricultural methods, superstitions, and so forth. There is a chapter on language, literature, and education and a separate appendix on German family names. Perhaps the most informative chapter in the book covers the extraordinarily diverse religious life of these Protestant Germans, which, while dominated by the Lutheran and Reformed churches, also accommodated Moravians, Mennonites, Brethren, Dunkards, Seventh-Day Baptists, Schwenckfelders, and others.

Tracing Your Huguenot Ancestors

Tracing Your Huguenot Ancestors PDF Author: Kathy Chater
Publisher: Casemate Publishers
ISBN: 1781597596
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 138

Book Description
“A well researched, informative and helpful book for the many family historians whose Protestant ancestors lived in Northern Europe.” —Federation of Family History Societies Between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, many thousands of Protestants fled religious persecution in France and the Low Countries. They became one of the most influential immigrant communities in the countries where they settled, and many families in modern-day Britain will find a Huguenot connection in their past. Kathy Chater’s authoritative handbook offers an accessible introduction to Huguenot history and to the many sources that researchers can use to uncover the Huguenot ancestry they may not have realized they had. She traces the history of the Huguenots; their experience of persecution, and their flight to Britain, North America, the West Indies and South Africa, concentrating on the Huguenot communities that settled in England, Ireland, Scotland and the Channel Islands. Her work is also an invaluable guide to the various sources researchers can turn to in order to track their Huguenot ancestors, for she describes the wide range of records that is available in local, regional and national archives, as well as through the internet and overseas. Her expert overview is essential reading for anyone studying their Huguenot ancestry or immigrant history in Britain. “This is a useful, up to date, practical guide for anyone who has, or thinks they have, Huguenot ancestors in the British Isles. It provides social and contextual assistance along with guidance on what records have survived, where to find them and how to use them.” —Milner Genealogy

East Jersey Under the Proprietary Governments

East Jersey Under the Proprietary Governments PDF Author: William A. Whitehead
Publisher: Digital Antiquaria
ISBN: 1580574947
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
y William A. Whitehead Republished from the original 1846 edition - (PDF 4.13Mb, 270pp, illustrated) Whitehead's "East Jersey" is now rarely seen, but is the most frequently-cited source for information relating to the colonial period prior to 1702. Drawing upon original manuscripts and pamphlets, the author preserves a detailed account of the first settlers of the eastern division of Berkeley and Carteret's grant from the Duke of York. The work concentrates on the development of the communities of Perth Amboy and Pisctaway, as well as the exploration and development of lands up the Raritan River and around Shrewsbury. Other settlements (mostly old Dutch communities) are mentioned, but largely ignored. Of particular interest is the inclusion of George Scot's "The Model of the Government of the Province of East Jersey in America" in its entirety - apparently for the first time since its original printing in 1685. This important work supported the efforts of the Scots proprietors of East Jersey to recruit planters, apprentices, tradesmen, merchants and servants to the New World. The text includes letters written by the first Scots settlers which describe New Jersey as a wonderful alternative to Scotland. Whitehead also wrote a supplement to this volume, "Contributions to the Early History of Perth Amboy," which details the history of the area until the American Revolution and somewhat beyond. As the original edition is among the most sought-after of published Jerseyana, this masterfully-published eBook edition will be especially welcome to students of New Jersey history..
