Book Description
The RF 1475–1556 Louvre Album is universally regarded as a corpus of drawings that was executed by the Venetian painter Jacopo Bellini. The album’s trajectory prior to coming into the possession of the Bellini family is elucidated in the present book. Based on Norberto Gramaccini’s interpretation, it was the Paduan painter Francesco Squarcione who was the mastermind and financier behind the drawings. The preparatory work had actually been delegated to his most gifted pupils, among them Andrea Mantegna, Jacopo Bellini ́s future son-in-law. The drawing’s topics —anatomy, perspective, archeology, mythology, contemporary chronicles, and zoology —were part of the teaching program of an art academy established by Squarcione in the 1440s, famous in its day, which provided crucial impulses for the training of artists in the modern era.

Young Bellini
Author: Daniel Wallace Maze
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780300236613
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
Widely recognized as one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance, Giovanni Bellini is revered for his mastery of color, atmosphere and light. However, his early life and career remain something of a mystery. Daniel Wallace Maze expands on groundbreaking research that argues Jacopo Bellini was not Giovanni Bellini's father, but rather his half-brother, and that Giovanni was born between 1424-26, up to fifteen years earlier than current scholars' estimates. In light of this, Young Bellini explores the artist's early life, including his birth, his unusual upbringing in Venice, and his first-known works of art. Presenting a clear narrative of his early career, and offering a number of newly attributed paintings, Maze provides answers to longstanding questions about Bellini, and poses new questions that will frame future research on the artist's contribution to the Renaissance.

Painting in Renaissance Venice
Author: Peter Humfrey
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 9780300067156
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
The Renaissance was a golden age in the long history of Venetian painting, and the art that came from Venice during that era includes some of the most visually exciting works in the whole of western art. This attractive book - a comprehensive account of painting in Venice from Bellini to Titian to Tintoretto - is an accessible introduction to the paintings of this period. Peter Humfrey surveys the development of a distinctly Venetian artistic tradition from the middle years of the fifteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century. He discusses the work of Jacopo and Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto as well as the paintings of those less well known - such as the three Vivarini, Cima, Carpaccio, Palma Vecchio, Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo Bassano. Humfrey analyses these painters' works in terms of their pictorial style, technique, subject matter, patronage and function. He also sets the art against the background of the political, social and religious conditions of Renaissance Venice, as outlined in his Introduction. The book includes an appendix that provides brief biographies of thirty-six of the most important painters active in Renaissance Venice.
