Book Description
Rainbow of Desire is a handbook of exercises with a difference. It is Augusto Boal's bold and brilliant statement about the therapeutic ability of theatre to liberate individuals and change lives. Now translated into English and comprehensively updated from the French, Rainbow of Desire sets out the techniques which help us `see' for the first time the oppressions we have internalised. Boal, a Brazilian theatre director, writer and politician, has been confronting oppression in various forms for over thirty years. His belief that theatre is a means to create the future has inspired hundreds of groups all over the world to use his techniques in a multitude of settings. This, his latest work, includes such exercises as: * The Cops in the Head and their anti-bodies * The screen image * The image of the future we are afraid of * Image and counter-image ....and many more. Rainbow of Desire will make fascinating reading for those already familiar with Boal's work and is also completely accessible to anyone new to Theatre of the Oppressed techniques.

Cruelty and Desire in the Modern Theater

Cruelty and Desire in the Modern Theater PDF Author: Laurens De Vos
Publisher: Fairleigh Dickinson
ISBN: 1611470455
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
Departing from a refreshing look at the ideas of Antonin Artaud, this book provides a thorough analysis of how both Sarah Kane and Samuel Beckett are indebted to his legacy. In juxtaposing these playwrights, De Vos minutely points out how both in their own way struggle with coming to terms with Artaud. A key concept in Lacanian psychoanalytic theories, desire lies at the root of the Theatre of Cruelty; Kane and Beckett prove that desire and cruelty are inextricably linked to one another, but that they appear in radically different disguises. Relying on Kane and Beckett, this book not only sheds a light on the precise intentions behind Artaud's project, it also maps out the structural parallels and dichotomies between the Theatre of Cruelty and the literary genre of tragedy.

Desire and Anxiety (Routledge Revivals)

Desire and Anxiety (Routledge Revivals) PDF Author: Valerie Traub
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317619749
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 195

Book Description
In both feminist theory and Shakespearean criticism, questions of sexuality have consistently been conflated with questions of gender. First published in 1992, this book details the intersections and contradictions between sexuality and gender in the early modern period. Valerie Traub argues that desire and anxiety together constitute the erotic in Shakespearean drama – circulating throughout the dramatic texts, traversing ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ sites, eliciting and expressing heterosexual and homoerotic fantasies, embodiments, and fears. This is the first book to present a non-normalizing account of the unconscious and the institutional prerogatives that comprise the erotics of Shakespearean drama. Employing feminist, psychoanalytic, and new historical methods, and using each to interrogate the other, the book synthesises the psychic and the social, the individual and the institutional.

Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
The Enigma of Desire: Sex, Longing and Belonging in Psychoanalysis, introduces new perspectives on desire and longing, in and outside of the analytic relationship. This exciting volume explores the known and unknown, ghosts and demons, sexuality and lust. Galit Atlas discusses the subjects of sex and desire and explores what she terms the Enigmatic and the Pragmatic aspects of sexuality, longing, female desire, sexual inhibition, pregnancy, parenthood and creativity. The author focuses on the levels of communication that take place in the most intimate settings: between mothers and their babies; between lovers; in the unconscious bond of two people— in the consulting room, where two individuals sit alone in one room, looking and listening, breathing and dreaming. Atlas examines the ways in which different languages, translations and integrations focus on birth, death, sexuality, and human bonds. In The Enigma of Desire each chapter opens with a narrative, a therapeutic story which illustrates both the analyst’s and patient’s desires and the ways these interact and emerge in the consulting room. This book will be of interest to anyone who is interested in the intricacies of sex and desire and of great appeal to psychoanalysts, therapists and mental health professionals.

Doom, Desire and the Polis in Eugene O'Neill's Drama

Doom, Desire and the Polis in Eugene O'Neill's Drama PDF Author: Adel Bahroun
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527591395
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 203

Book Description
This book shows that Eugene O’Neill’s modern American drama is a survey on the politics of desire, the power of doom, and the variable configurations of the polis. It highlights that the modern American city, or polis, is the stage on which the antithetic categories of doom and desire are re-enacted in different undertones. The text notes that desire, doom, schizophrenia, and the archeology of the polis are reconceived by the playwright, while legacy, sexuality, lucre, and the volatility of the free flow of capital entrap the American subject in a maze of qualms and queries. Subjection and resistance give birth to schizorevolutionary subjects, seeking lines of flight. Indeed, as noted here, O’Neill’s plays portray their protagonists as desiring machines, trying to evade the modern closed circles of power, and various modes of becoming, to use Gilles Deleuze’s concept. O’Neill encounters Deleuze at the level of thoughts and sensations, anticipating postmodern plateaus for the human subject to grow into a rhizome.
