Technical Bulletin, Medical DOD Human-Animal Bond Program Principles and Guidelines U.S. ARMY VETERINARY SERVICES 3 August 2015 The purpose of this document is to provide guidance and principles for Human Animal Bond (HAB) programs in the Department of Defense (DOD). It outlines a multi-disciplinary approach to program planning, implementation and evaluation. This document applies to all DOD activities that operate HAB programs. The animal's role in the military has a rich history, from cavalry mounts to modern-day MWDs and Navy dolphins. However, these utilitarian roles are only the starting point for the many ways in which animals may benefit humans. Research on the dynamic interaction between humans and animals has led to discovery of the benefits conveyed by animals when facilitating therapy in a multitude of health care settings. This discovery subsequently evolved into the development of HAB programs. Such programs have increased utilization of animals in MTFs, WTUs, and other installation facilities. HAB programs involve the interactions between people and animals, their attachments, and the significance of the human-animal bond to patients' mental, social, and physical health.
