Book Description
Posen, a retired physician and a former English major, has indexed 1500 passages from approximately 600 novels, short stories and plays describing physicians. Marlowe: A Critical Study

Marlowe: A Critical Study PDF Author: J. B. Steane
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN: 9780521065450
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
This is a thorough critical study of Marlowe's entire output - plays, translations and poems - prefaced by a biographical chapter. It is an attempt to provide the 'life and works' study for the general reader. Mr Steane takes the poetry as the centre of his interest; offering a literary judgement on Marlowe's art rather than further discussion of sources and background. He provides a balanced account of a great poetic dramatist, a writer of exceptional power whose poetry also reveals profound human flaws.

Two Centuries of British Symphonism

Two Centuries of British Symphonism PDF Author: Jürgen Schaarwächter
Publisher: Georg Olms Verlag
ISBN: 3487152282
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 619

Book Description
Only in relatively recent times has any real attention been given to British symphonies. So a comprehensive survey, showing what exists and how the situation in the United Kingdom developed, from the beginnings in the 18th century until well into the 20th century, is long overdue. The preliminary survey presented here shows how a British symphonic identity gradually took shape over more than a century, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempts to find new ways of expression. By the end of the 19th century, British symphonists had produced an impressive body of work, yet only with the appearance of Elgar’s two symphonies in the following decade did this flourishing school find a champion of international renown. In this publication, light is shone on those works that have to some extent been overshadowed, as well as on those that have remained unpublished or unperformed. The result is a multi-faceted panorama of British symphonism, offering many insights into the composers’ thinking and their socio-cultural contexts. A comprehensive catalogue of all known works and an extensive bibliography invite readers to delve further into the subject.

Transformation and Tradition in 1960s British Cinema

Transformation and Tradition in 1960s British Cinema PDF Author: Farmer Richard Farmer
Publisher: Edinburgh University Press
ISBN: 1474423140
Category : Motion pictures
Languages : en
Pages : 390

Book Description
Over half a century on, the 1960s continue to generate strong intellectual and emotional responses - both positive and negative - and this is no less true in the arena of film. Making substantial use of new and underexplored archive resources that provide a wealth of information and insight on the period in question, this book offers a fresh perspective on the major resurgence of creativity and international appeal experienced by British cinema in that dramatic decade. Transformation and Tradition in 1960s British Cinema is the first scholarly volume on this period of British cinema for more than twenty-five years. It provides a major reconsideration of the period by focusing on the central tensions and contradiction between novelty/revolution and continuity/tradition during what remains a highly contentious period of cultural production and consumption.
