Book Description
The human race struggles from the edge of extinction in the late twenty- second century. When a massive virtual life facility is brought out of hibernation and slowly brought back online, a new hope materializes. Fragments of humanity begin to move into the remnants of Denver and the Virtua-Gauge facilities, which offer seven days of virtual leisure for seven days work in this new and growing social structure. Rizette and her husband Oray settle into their new marriage as the virtual facilities expand and thrive. Most inhabitants of this new lifestyle live and work for the seven day period inside the virtual pods. A variety of luxury role play inside the virtual zone creates the motivation needed to work hard for seven days in the real world. In this new social structure a man can work for seven days in a food dispersal unit and earn seven days as a twenty first century software billionaire in the virtual zone. As time goes by and more of the virtual pods are brought back online life appears to be getting better. Oray has become a Class A Diver and enjoys his job. He often works in the secure "lower levels." These areas are the dividing space between the real world and the world of the virtual zone. The original designers intentionally placed the buffer zone in the system to avoid threats from non-living virtual personnel. As Oray becomes more experienced in his elite technical position as a Diver, he is approached by his virtual assistant and forced to make a difficult decision. Oray's decision triggers events that soon pull him and his wife Rizette into a deadly quest for survival. The stage becomes a massive and complex maze of virtual world sequences as escape or entrapment hang on precious threads of information. System ghosts from the distant past intermingle with mysterious factions that have thrown Oray and Rizette into a cyberspace trap with little hope for survival.

The Day the Johnboat Went Up the Mountain

The Day the Johnboat Went Up the Mountain PDF Author: Carl Naylor
Publisher: Univ of South Carolina Press
ISBN: 1611171342
Category : Biography & Autobiography

Book Description
A maritime archeologist recounts twenty years of remarkable discoveries and adventures both in and under the waters of South Carolina. Through personal anecdotes and archeological data, Carl Naylor documents his experiences in the service of the Maritime Research Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology. Along the way he shares a unique foray into the Palmetto State’s history and prehistory. Naylor’s fascinating career includes raising the Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley; dredging the bottom of an Allendale County creek for evidence of the earliest Paleoindians; exploring the waters off Winyah Bay for a Spanish ship lost in 1526 and the waters of Port Royal Sound for a French corsair wrecked in 1577; and many other adventures. He recounts his investigations of suspected Revolutionary War gunboats in the Cooper River, the famous Brown’s Ferry cargo vessel found in the Black River, a steamship sunk in a storm off Hilton Head Island in 1899, and other mysteries of maritime history. Throughout these episodes, Naylor gives an insider’s view of the methods of underwater archaeology in stories that focus on the events, personalities, and contexts of historic finds and on the impact of these discoveries on our knowledge of the Palmetto State’s past. His memoir is a personal, authoritative account of South Carolina’s efforts to discover and preserve evidence of its remarkable maritime history.
