Dentro del contexto de la Automatización Industrial se encuentran los sistemas de información y comunicación Industriales, los cuales permiten el desarrollo y la mejora de infinidad de procesos industriales. Con esto se consiguen mejoras en la producción y calidad, disminución de riesgos laborales, etc. A continuación se describe el diseño y la implementación de la supervisión, el control y la simulación de un proceso químico, en concreto el procesado de la leche cruda hasta la obtención de la leche pasteurizada, apta para su envasado y su consumo. Para ello se ha realizado un sistema SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Adquisition) a partir del cual se puede realizar la supervisión y el control del proceso. Para ello se ha utilizado el software de Wonderware, InTouch 2014 R2; todo ello controlado a través del software para controladores de PLCs ( Programmable Logic Controller) de la marca RockWell, RSLogix 5000 todo ello simulando los valores con el emulador RSLogix Emulate de Allen Bradley. Esto permite trabajar con los PLC de la gama 5000 y simular su desarrollo. Gracias a todo esto ha sido posible llevar a cabo el diseño del proceso escogido, de forma correcta ajustándose en todo momento al proceso real para que éste sea desarrollado y controlado mediante dicha programación.

Aquesta planta ja disposava d'un sistema de control basat en un controlador OMRON. S'ha realitzat una aplicació software SCADA per a la supervisió, regulació i control d'aquesta planta hidràulica permetent una dualitat entre el controlador OMRON del que es disposava amb anterioritat i el PLC que s'afegeix en la realització d'aquest projecte. D'aquesta manera es podrà escollir el mode de control, ja sigui mitjançant el controlador OMRON o mitjançant el PLC. Com a objectiu secundari s'ha tingut en compte que aquest software es podrà utilitzar com a plataforma de docència ja que es pot posar a proba la planta segons diferents mètodes de control.

In 1982 the International Association on Water Pollution Research and Control (IAWPRC), as it was then called, established a Task Group on Mathematical Modelling for Design and Operation of Activated Sludge Processes. The aim of the Task Group was to create a common platform that could be used for the future development of models for COD and N removal with a minimum of complexity. As the collaborative result of the work of several modelling groups, the Activated Sludge Model No. 1 (ASM1) was published in 1987, exactly 25 years ago. The ASM1 can be considered as the reference model, since this model triggered the general acceptance of wastewater treatment modelling, first in the research community and later on also in practice. ASM1 has become a reference for many scientific and practical projects, and has been implemented (in some cases with modifications) in most of the commercial software available for modelling and simulation of plants for N removal. The models have grown more complex over the years, from ASM1, including N removal processes, to ASM2 (and its variations) including P removal processes, and ASM3 that corrects the deficiencies of ASM1 and is based on a metabolic approach to modelling. So far, ASM1 is the most widely applied. Applications of Activated Sludge Models has been prepared in celebration of 25 years of ASM1 and in tribute to the activated sludge modelling pioneer, the late Professor G.v.R. Marrais. It consists of a dozen of practical applications for ASM models to model development, plant optimization, extension, upgrade, retrofit and troubleshooting, carried out by the members of the Delft modelling group over the last two decades.

In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach
