Direct Shear Testing of Marine Sediment

Book Description
Traditionally, the methods used to determine the mechanical properties of marine sediments were those used in the field of soil mechanics. These methods are generally acceptable when the sediment tested is plastic or at water contents below the liquid limit. However, for predicting in-situ conditions, that is for sediment at water contents above the liquid limit, the problem is complex. Specifically, the determination of shear strength of an unconsolidated-undrained sample by the direct shear method was found to exhibit an angle of internal friction ranging from 19 degrees to 23.5 degrees. This indicates that the shear strength of the sediments is dependent on the normal load applied to it. (Author).

A Comparison of the Test Results of Vane and Direct Shear Tests Made on Recent Marine Sediments

A Comparison of the Test Results of Vane and Direct Shear Tests Made on Recent Marine Sediments PDF Author: A. L. Inderbitzen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Marine geotechnics
Languages : en
Pages : 24

Book Description
Shear strength envelopes calculated from consolidated-undrained direct shear tests (hereafter called direct-shear lines) were compared to strength envelopes calculated from vane shear tests (hereafter called vane-shear lines) made throughout the length of a sediment core. These comparisons were made on shear strength measurements from seven recent marine sediment cores. The seven sediment cores used for this study were obtained from the upper San Diego Trough slope in water depths of 249 to 291 meters by Lockheed's submersible DEEP QUEST. The materials tested were classified primarily in the clayey silt to silty clay range based upon grain size distribution. (Author).

The Effect of Varying the Parameters of Vane Shear Tests of Marine Sediments

The Effect of Varying the Parameters of Vane Shear Tests of Marine Sediments PDF Author: James Charles Singler
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Oceanography
Languages : en
Pages : 42

Book Description
The consequences resulting from varying the parameters of the vane shear test (used to determine the shear strength of marine sediments) were investigated. Experiment showed that larger ratios of container diameter to vane diameter yield more accurate shear strengths. It was also shown that the four-bladed vane produced the best results. Finally, rates of rotation of one and two revolutions per hour were found to give accurate values of shear strength, while higher rates of rotation proved to be unsatisfactory. (Author).

Book Description
As part of its continuing program to stimulate superior basic research in the marine environment, the Office of Naval Research, Ocean Science and Technology Division, sponsored a series of closed seminar-workshops in 1972-1973. Each seminar focused upon one re search area of marine geology which is relatively new and in need of a critical evaluation and accelerated support. The subjects areas chosen for the seminars were: 1. natural gases in marine sediments and their mode of distribution, 2. nephelometry and the optical properties of ocean waters, 3. physical and engineering properties of deep-sea sediments, and 4. physics of sound in marine sediments. The objectives of each seminar-workshop were to bring into sharper focus the state-of-the-science within each subject area, to effect some degree of coordination among the investigators working within each of these areas and to provide the Ocean Science and Technology Division guidance for national program support. This volume.contains most of the papers presented at the semi nar on the physical and engineering properties of deep-sea sediments. The seminar was held at Airlie House, Airlie, Virginia on April 24- 27, 1973 and was organized and chaired by A. Inderbitzen. The at tendees were invited from among the leading investigators in this field from both the engineering and scientific disciplines. Each attendee was requested to prepare a paper within his area of spe ciality.

An Analysis of Sediment Shear Strength

An Analysis of Sediment Shear Strength PDF Author: Robert Carl Hansen (Jr)

Pages : 104

Book Description
The part played by laboratory testing in the successful application of underwater soil mechanics to problems concerning ocean engineering depends both on the uniformity of the natural strata and on the skill and experience of the engineer. The empirical relationships developed in terrestrial soil mechanics for designing foundations and determining soil mass stability are based to a major extent on triaxial tests, while virtually all data on marine sediments have been acquired using vane shear tests. The standard vane shear test has been most widely used because it can be performed quickly, with a minimum of sample disturbance, and the equipment is relatively simple and inexpensive. This study concerns the determination of laboratory shear strength for a marine soil, and evaluates the relationship between the vane shear test and triaxial test results. For the particular sediment tested (a clayey silt), the initial tests indicate the vane shear peak strength to be 10% of the triaxial test peak shear strength, however, thus far, the writer has found virtually no correlation between the two tests.
