Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030057739
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 291

Book Description
This book presents an overview of urban and regional planning in Turkey. It discusses the fundamental topics and contemporary issues in the field. The book is organized in two parts and it includes 14 chapters. Chapter 1 is designed as an introduction defining the framework of urbanisation in Turkey, and the evolution of urban planning providing a background for the remaining chapters. In Part I, contemporary issues of urban and regional planning in Turkey are covered (i.e., new route taken by regional planning, the role of the planner in the process of shaping the urban form of Turkish cities, the specific features of Turkish city centres, large-scale public investments and their effects on urban areas, urban growth of Turkish cities from an urban morphological viewpoint, and problems and recent planning discussions related to the conservation of archaeological heritage). The challenges faced by urban and regional planning in Turkey are discussed in Part II (i.e., major challenges in residential transformation, excess housing production and the future of housing markets, challenges posed by increasing (global) immigration and refugees, challenges due to integration of a resilience thinking framework into the planning systems, development and planning activities of settlements in hazard prone areas, and the current state of climate policy and governance). In the concluding chapter an overall assessment of the contemporary issues and challenges for urban and regional planning in Turkey is made with special emphasis on the last 15 years of the country. The New Localism

The New Localism PDF Author: Edward G. Goetz
Publisher: SAGE Publications
ISBN: 1452254605
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 237

Book Description
How have local economic conditions been affected by the emergence of a global economy? What changes, if any, have local political authorities made to counterbalance the new emphasis on world interests? Comprehensive and timely, The New Localism answers these and other vital questions by exploring local political restructuring in the face of massive global economic change. Prominent urban scholars cover the privatization of local politics, the emergence of local economic and social activism, and increased competition--on both local and national levels. This important volume examines various levels of development in such diverse political settings as the United States, the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. The New Localism is a must read for students and scholars of urban studies, comparative politics, political science, third world development, planning, public administration, and sociology. "Goetz and Clarke′s book brings a useful perspective to this literature, not so much because of its theoretical originality, but for its didactic value. It is a straightforward presentation of cases of urban restructuring, well integrated within a common conceptual framework labelled "new localism" --Canadian Journal of Urban Research

Historical Dictionary of Niger

Historical Dictionary of Niger PDF Author: Rahmane Idrissa
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1538120151
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 643

Book Description
Niger is a crossroad, the gate to the outside for West Africans, and the port of entry into West Africa for cross-Saharan tidings and travelers. It remained for centuries the largely uncontrolled periphery of the large empires of the western Sudan and the market cities of the central Sudan. In these two ways, the land forged a very distinctive identity, a fluid blend of diverse communities which make up a nation of marginal cosmopolitans – a paradox illuminated in this book. This fifth edition of Historical Dictionary of Niger contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Niger.
