This paper discusses how the author investigates the way in which project managers develop professionally during the course of their careers. In doing so, it describes the actual planned, self-guided, and innate development paths of project managers. It identifies the four elements of standard practice of planned development for project managers. The paper notes what the planned development of project managers should be aimed at. It explains that understanding the way in which project managers guide themselves in their development toward success and high professional standards, it must be known what they experience in practice. The paper highlights some dilemmas in making this determination and distinguishes between four levels of learning from experience.
