English Ministry Crisis in Chinese Canadian Churches

English Ministry Crisis in Chinese Canadian Churches PDF Author: Matthew Richard Sheldon Todd
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1498208843
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 409

Book Description
In this book, Dr. Matthew Todd looks into the anecdotal reporting of high numbers of Canadian-born Chinese leaving Western Canadian Chinese churches--what is termed the silent exodus. Some of the fastest-growing Canadian churches are Chinese, yet reportedly the highest dropout rates are among Chinese and Asian church adult ministries. This book recommends solutions towards the retention of Canadian-born Chinese adults in Chinese bicultural churches through empowerment. To address retention, the key factors that contribute to a silent exodus are established through qualitative research with participants of diverse church affiliations. Todd examines various models and proposed solutions the Chinese church has used to retain its English-speaking congregants, and gives attention to a theological basis for being inclusive in mission initiatives and for empowerment through passing the leadership baton. Todd makes some recommendations on the new wave of an emerging congregational model that requires negotiation with Chinese church leadership to give power away to English ministry leaders and congregations. He anticipates that this will permit transformational leadership practices that contribute to shalom, community transformation, and lasting congregations.

Builders of the Chinese Church

Builders of the Chinese Church PDF Author: G. Wright Doyle
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1630878812
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
From 1807, when the first Protestant missionary arrived in China, to the 1920s, when a new phase of growth began, thousands of missionaries and Chinese Christians labored, often under very adverse conditions, to lay the groundwork for a solid, healthy, and self-sustaining Chinese church. Following an Introduction that sets the scene and surveys the entire period, Builders of the Chinese Church contains the stories of nine leading pioneers--seven missionaries and two Chinese. Here we meet Robert Morrison, the heroic translator; Liang Fa, the first Chinese evangelist; missionary-scholar James Legge; J. Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission; converted opium addict Pastor Hsi ("Overcomer of Demons"); Griffith John and Jonathan Goforth, both indefatigable preachers; and the idealistic advocates of education and reform, W. A. P. Martin and Timothy Richard. Readers will be inspired by their courage, devotion, and sheer perseverance in arduous work, and will gain an understanding of the roots of the two "branches" of today's Chinese Protestantism.

Book Description
There is a gospel movement quietly spreading through the largest country in the world. Despite secularism, materialism, and social decay, despite government control and persecution, "house churches" are attracting millions of new believers throughout the major cities of China. Among these churches, a new movement of pastors form a true indigenous expression of Reformed theology, preaching prophetically to a postmodern audience and preparing and strengthening their flocks for suffering. In this book, five Chinese house church pastors apply scripture to life in modern China, which mirrors a fast-paced globalized world that has lost its moral framework. Developed from sermons on the five solas, these essays speak to pastors and laypeople alike who seek to follow Christ out of Christian complacency and provide a beacon to the alienated modern global citizen.

Shanghai Faithful

Shanghai Faithful PDF Author: Jennifer Lin
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 144225694X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
Within the next decade, China could be home to more Christians than any country in the world. Through the 150-year saga of a single family, this book vividly dramatizes the remarkable religious evolution of the world’s most populous nation. Shanghai Faithful is both a touching family memoir and a chronicle of the astonishing spread of Christianity in China. Five generations of the Lin family—buffeted by history’s crosscurrents and personal strife—bring to life an epoch that is still unfolding. A compelling cast—a poor fisherman, a doctor who treated opium addicts, an Ivy League–educated priest, and the charismatic preacher Watchman Nee—sets the bookin motion. Veteran journalist Jennifer Lin takes readers from remote nineteenth-century mission outposts to the thriving house churches and cathedrals of today’s China. The Lin family—and the book’s central figure, the Reverend Lin Pu-chi—offer witness to China’s tumultuous past, up to and beyond the betrayals and madness of the Cultural Revolution, when the family’s resolute faith led to years of suffering. Forgiveness and redemption bring the story full circle. With its sweep of history and the intimacy of long-hidden family stories, Shanghai Faithful offers a fresh look at Christianity in China—past, present, and future.
