This paper investigates the economic and non-economic determinants of interregional migration for unskilled and skilled migrants in Italy for the period 1985-2006. In addition to the traditional variables of the Harris and Todaro model, we consider the impact of house prices, carbon dioxide emission and crime. Using a dynamic two-step panel generalized method of moments, the traditional model omits some important variables and may not be representative of migration flow. Our analysis confirms that for different periods we have to take into account different determinants. Moreover, the externalities are significant, indicating the importance of including broader quality of life as explanatory variables.

This study investigates the determinants of interregional migration flows in Italy in the light of the upsurge occurred in 1996, after two decades of decreasing internal migration rates. The"fixed-effect vector decomposition estimator"(FEVD) is applied to a gravity model using bilateral migration flows for the period 1996-2005. It is shown that the FEVD improves the estimates with respect to the traditional panel data estimators. The GDP per capita and the unemployment rate appear to be the key determinants whose changes push migrants out from their regions and direct them to “better off” destinations. Migrants leaving the regions in the Center-North respond differently to the push and pull forces compared to southern migrants. The dynamic model provides evidence for the presence of social networks, which in this analysis take place for each pair of regions.

In part I of this book a dynamic migratory model connecting the microlevel of individual migration trends with the macrolevel of interregional migration is developed. Its derivation makes use of the master equation method. Applying a ranking regression analysis, the trend parameters of the model are correlated to regional socio-economic key factors. In part II the model is applied to interregional migration within the countries Federal Republic of Germany, Canada, France, Israel, Italy and Sweden. In part III a comparative analysis of the results is given. In part IV a selfcontained derivation of the master equation and of solutions relevant for the migratory system is given, the ranking regression analysis is exemplified and a computer program for the estimation of trendparameters is added.

Using panel data analysis on gross migration flows between regions, the empirical analysis investigates the role of the macroeconomic determinants during the period 1996-2002. After two decades of low internal migration rates, official national statistics report a considerable increase of internal mobility that started in 1996 and continues to grow at the time of writing. The study distinguishes between the role played by the same explanatory variable in the sending region (push factor) and in the destination region (pull factor). The per capita GDP turns out to be the main economic determinant, showing a strong effect both when it acts as a push factor and when it acts as an attractive factor. The unemployment rate appears to be an important determinant as well. The results from the dynamic model show the presence of strong network effects.

"South-South Migration and Remittances" reports on preliminary results from an ongoing effort to improve data on bilateral migration stocks. It sets out some working hypotheses on the determinants and socioeconomic implications of South-South migration. Contrary to popular perception that migration is mostly a South-North phenomenon, South-South migration is large. Available data from national censuses suggest that nearly half of the migrants from developing countries reside in other developing countries. Almost 80 percent of South-South migration takes place between countries with contiguous borders. Estimates of South-South remittances range from 9 to 30 percent of developing countries' remittance receipts in 2005. Although the impact of South-South migration on the income of migrants and natives is smaller than for South-North migration, small increases in income can have substantial welfare implications for the poor. The costs of South-South remittances are even higher than those of North-South remittances. These findings suggest that policymakers should pay attention to the complex challenges that developing countries face not only as countries of origin, but also as countries of destination.
