Design and Implementation of an Online Laboratory for Introductory Digital Systems

Design and Implementation of an Online Laboratory for Introductory Digital Systems PDF Author: Judy Tsai
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 64

Book Description
In this thesis, I designed and implemented an online, web-based laboratory system for the Introductory Digital Systems Laboratory course at MIT (6.111). The intent is to allow a student access to a 6.111 labkit, program it, and view the results without ever entering the physical lab room. The lab architecture consists of primarily of two portions: a server and a client. The server programs the Xilinx FPGA on the labkit, and it controls the logic analyzer used to observe the labkit signals. The client is a Java applet that can send code to the server and retrieve logic analyzer data from the server. The user can view and manipulate the retrieved data through the client. The applet is embedded in a web page, along with a video stream that shows the labkit setup live to the user. The user interface is designed to be accessible from any browser, independent of platform.

The lab manual by Greg Moss (A Design Approach) features digital logic design using complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs) or field progammable gate arrays (FPGAs). In other words, this lab manual uses Quartus software rather than the old-school hands-on lab equipment. ISBN-10: 0132153815 ISBN-13: 9780132153812

Digital Design

Digital Design PDF Author: Frank Vahid
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN:
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 558

Book Description
"Digital Design provides a modern approach to learning the increasingly important topic of digital systems design. The text's focus on register-transfer-level design and present-day applications not only leads to a better appreciation of computers and of today's ubiquitous digital devices, but also provides for a better understanding of careers involving digital design and embedded system design. The book's key features include: An emphasis on register-transfer-level (RTL) design, the level at which most digital design is practiced today, giving readers a modern perspective of the field's applicability. Yet, coverage stays bottom-up and concrete, starting from basic transistors and gates, and moving step-by-step up to more complex components. Extensive use of basic examples to teach and illustrate new concepts, and of application examples, such as pacemakers, ultrasound machines, automobiles, and cell phones, to demonstrate the immediate relevance of the concepts. Separation of basic design from optimization, allowing development of a solid understanding of basic design, before considering the more advanced topic of optimization. Flexible organization, enabling early or late coverage of optimization methods or of HDLs, and enabling choice of VHDL, Verilog, or SystemC HDLs. Career insights and advice from designers with varying levels of experience. A clear bottom-up description of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). About the Author: Frank Vahid is a Professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of California, Riverside. He holds Electrical Engineering and Computer Science degrees; has worked/consulted for Hewlett Packard, AMCC, NEC, Motorola, and medical equipment makers; holds 3 U.S. patents; has received several teaching awards; helped setup UCR's Computer Engineering program; has authored two previous textbooks; and has published over 120 papers on digital design topics (automation, architecture, and low-power).

Digital Systems Design with FPGAs and CPLDs

Digital Systems Design with FPGAs and CPLDs PDF Author: Ian Grout
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 008055850X
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 763

Book Description
Digital Systems Design with FPGAs and CPLDs explains how to design and develop digital electronic systems using programmable logic devices (PLDs). Totally practical in nature, the book features numerous (quantify when known) case study designs using a variety of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLD), for a range of applications from control and instrumentation to semiconductor automatic test equipment.Key features include:* Case studies that provide a walk through of the design process, highlighting the trade-offs involved.* Discussion of real world issues such as choice of device, pin-out, power supply, power supply decoupling, signal integrity- for embedding FPGAs within a PCB based design. With this book engineers will be able to:* Use PLD technology to develop digital and mixed signal electronic systems* Develop PLD based designs using both schematic capture and VHDL synthesis techniques* Interface a PLD to digital and mixed-signal systems* Undertake complete design exercises from design concept through to the build and test of PLD based electronic hardwareThis book will be ideal for electronic and computer engineering students taking a practical or Lab based course on digital systems development using PLDs and for engineers in industry looking for concrete advice on developing a digital system using a FPGA or CPLD as its core. Case studies that provide a walk through of the design process, highlighting the trade-offs involved. Discussion of real world issues such as choice of device, pin-out, power supply, power supply decoupling, signal integrity- for embedding FPGAs within a PCB based design.

Introductory Digital Logic Labs

Introductory Digital Logic Labs PDF Author: Tim Johnson
Publisher: Captains Engineerings
ISBN: 9780972172646
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 78

Book Description
Associate Professor Tim Johnson and Andrew Tracy, a junior in the computer engineering technology program, of Wentworth Institute of Technology, have published a new lab book for students taking introductory logic classes that introduce the graphical features of Altera¿s Quartus II software for digital circuit design for system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC). Students learn the basics of design flow: Design Entry, Synthesis, Place and Routing, Simulation, Timing Analysis, JTAG programming, and Configuration. Each lab has increased complexity and builds upon previous learning. These skills will be useful in today¿s industrial environment where intellectual property is but a mouse click away. Students at Wentworth use the UP-1 evaluation board to test their design on the 25-megahertz EPM7128SLC84-7 chip by Altera. This lab book puts into the student's a powerful design tool. Once the basic design procedure is learned, every design becomes the stepping stone for the next design. VHDL text can be integrated easily into their designs and they can mix and match styles once they understand the design process.
