Development of a telemetry system for monitoring piston characteristics inside combustion engines

Development of a telemetry system for monitoring piston characteristics inside combustion engines PDF Author: Paul Lagaly
Publisher: Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH
ISBN: 3832582665
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
This project aimed to develop a compact and lightweight telemetry system that mechanically decouples measurements, enabling versatile applications across different measurement scenarios, particularly for pistons and other moving systems. Utilizing an ESP8266, a printed circuit board design was created from individually tested integrated circuits, which formed the foundation for measuring various physical variables. Given the challenging conditions inside a piston of an internal combustion engine, ensuring high robustness was paramount during the electrical engineering process to prevent failures due to high temperatures and acceleration levels. Alongside the installation process for thermocouples, software for energy-efficient measurement with customizable resolution and optional transmission via Wi-Fi or internal storing was developed. Demonstrating feasibility during full-load operation of a heavy-duty diesel engine, the telemetry system with a high-resolution surface thermocouple was integrated in one piston to establish a method for assigning crank angles, enabling measurement and transmission of surface temperatures with crank angle resolution. Further series of measurements, including the use of alternative fuels, were conducted with a third piston, expanding the findings. The outcome is an innovative telemetry measurement device capable of recording experimental data from moving components, potentially expediting market solutions by reducing development times.

Combustion in Piston Engines

Combustion in Piston Engines PDF Author: A. K. Oppenheim
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662062976
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
Combustion in Piston Engines presents the technique of pressure diagnostics to measure the fuel consumption in an engine cylinder and to monitor the operation of micro-electronic systems for its control. It provides a recipe for bridging the gap between the hydrocarbon-fed combustion technology of automotive powerplants of today and electro-magnetic technologies of the future. The author proposes and introduces a model for the design of a MECC (micro-electronically controlled combustion) systems to modulate combustion in engine cylinders. This system yields significant reduction in the formation of pollutants and the consumption of fuel, so that, eventually, emissions using any clean hydrocarbon fuel will be acceptable and gas mileage could be doubled.

Publisher: Artech House
ISBN: 9781580535502
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 640

Book Description
This new resource clearly presents introductory and advanced concepts in telemetry systems (the technology of automatic data transmission and measurement) with an emphasis on digital communications. Geared to both beginning and seasoned engineers, specific details of telemetry systems are explained within the context of an overall system. The book helps engineers design telemetry systems to meet a specific bit error rates, and perform link analysis for the design of a communications link.

Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines

Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines PDF Author: D.F.G. Durão
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400922418
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 398

Book Description
Much has been said and written about the abilities of modern instrumentation to help solve problems of combustion in engines. In the main, however, the design and fabr ication of combustion chambers continues to be based on extrapolation of exper ience gained from use and rig tests, with little input from advanced techniques such as those based on optical diagnotics. At the same time, it has become increasingly difficult to design better combustion chambers without knowledge of the relevant flow processes. Thus, the future must involve improved understanding which, in turn, will require detailed measurements of velocity, temperature and concentration. The need to narrow the gap between current industrial practice and the acquisition and implementation of improved techniques motivated the organization of the Advanced Study Institute upon which this volume is based. This Institute on Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines was arranged to display the needs of industry and the possibilities made available by modern instrumentation and, at the same time, to make clear the relative advantages of optical and probe techniques. Held at Vimeiro during the period from 13 to 26 September, 1987, the Institute was attended by 120 participants and 16 invited lecturers.

Wireless Telemetry for Gas-Turbine Applications

Wireless Telemetry for Gas-Turbine Applications PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
Wireless telemetry technology for transmitting power and data to and from sensors located inside a gas-turbine engine is reviewed. Two scenarios are considered: a rotating sensor hardwired to a shaft-mounted, inductively-coupled system; and a stationary or rotating microsensor telemetry module. Applications of these telemetry scenarios in the gas-turbine operating environment, the types of sensor measurements, the principles of telemetry, and a review of the current state of microfabricated components for telemetry systems are given. Inductive coupling for both data and power transmission is emphasized in the first scenario. The microsensor telemetry module discussed in the second scenario would need battery power or an alternative power source. These technologies are emerging and do not represent available products. A brief list of alternative technologies for providing power is presented at the end.
