The SAM High Level Cobalt-60 Irradiation Facility

The SAM High Level Cobalt-60 Irradiation Facility PDF Author: Kenneth A. Hardy
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Cobalt
Languages : en
Pages : 6

Book Description
In January 1960, a 12,400 curie cobalt-60 facility was installed at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. It was primarily designed to provide uniform fields at high dose rates for the whole-body exposure of large animals, such as primates, and other objects of comparable size. The cobalt-60 sources were arrayed about a horseshoe-shaped holder in such a manner that the holder could be treated mathematically upon calibration as a point source. The calibration was accomplished with both passive and active dosimetry systems and included comparison with other cobalt-60 facilities. Given are the physical dimensions and arrangement of the facility, the exposure geometry, the equations utilized to determine the dose rate, the compensations necessary for source decay, and the isodose limits. Book Description
A facility for the irradiation of small animals to intense radiation fields has been designed and built at the Radiobiological Laboratory of the University of Texas and the United States Air Force. A 1,200 curie Co60 source permits the exposure of rats to dose rates of 75 to 4,000 roentgens per minute.

Radiation Protection in the Design of Radiotherapy Facilities

Radiation Protection in the Design of Radiotherapy Facilities PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher: IAEA

Book Description
Provides practical guidance regarding the design and shielding of radiotherapy facilities. Methods for determining the necessary structural shielding for external beam units (cobalt-60 units, linear accelerators, superficial and orthovoltage units, and simulators), as well as for brachytherapy units, are described.

Radiation Source Use and Replacement

Radiation Source Use and Replacement PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press

Pages : 232

Book Description
In the United States there are several thousand devices containing high-activity radiation sources licensed for use in areas ranging from medical uses such as cancer therapy to safety uses such as testing of structures and industrial equipment. Those radiation sources are licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and state agencies. Concerns have been raised about the safety and security of the radiation sources, particularly amid fears that they could be used to create dirty bombs, or radiological dispersal device (RDD). In response to a request from Congress, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission asked the National Research Council to conduct a study to review the uses of high-risk radiation sources and the feasibility of replacing them with lower risk alternatives. The study concludes that the U.S. government should consider factors such as potential economic consequences of misuse of the radiation sources into its assessments of risk. Although the committee found that replacements of most sources are possible, it is not economically feasible in some cases. The committee recommends that the U.S. government take steps to in the near term to replace radioactive cesium chloride radiation sources, a potential "dirty bomb" ingredient used in some medical and research equipment, with lower-risk alternatives. The committee further recommends that longer term efforts be undertaken to replace other sources. The book presents a number of options for making those replacements.
