Crescent City and Del Norte County
Author: Del Norte County Historical Society
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing Library Editions
ISBN: 9781531616854
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
The rugged coastline and wild rivers of Del Norte County were once home to the Yurok and Tolowa Indians, who built their dwellings with planks cut from virgin redwood. The Klamath River was an early supply route to the gold mines, but its treacherous waters were soon abandoned in favor of the ocean port at Crescent City. Although its lighthouse guided many heavily laden ships to safe harbor, famous shipwrecks still lie off Del Norte's rocky coast. Pack mule teams streamed east, bound for mining camps, and ranches in the Smith River and Elk Valleys developed to supply them. River salmon became a major industry, and later the ocean's bounty supported fishermen. Redwood groves fed a thriving timber industry for over a century. Never lacking in drama, Del Norte's history includes a U.S. oil tanker sunk by a Japanese submarine in 1941 and, in 1964, a tsunami that swept through Crescent City, destroying almost all of its downtown.

The History of Del Norte County, California
Author: Esther Ruth Smith
Publisher: R.S. Tomini
ISBN: 9780962166402
Category : Del Norte County (Calif.)
Languages : en
Pages : 224
Book Description
An entertaining & invaluable book that covers the history of Del Norte County, California, from Civil War times to roughly the turn of the century. Del Norte County is in the northwest corner of the state & is probably one of the least known areas in California. The author, even though not a native of the area, gave to the pioneers of Del Norte County an authentic history of their ancestors. Oscar Lewis in his introduction says "by searching out the records of the pioneer families of the area & by bringing to light the personal reminiscences of many of them, the author & compiler has directed attention to phases of California life rarely touched on in more formal histories," & that "Del Norte County--& incidentally the state as a whole--is fortunate in having, after so many years, found so discerning & wise a historian." There are personal narratives & excerpts from diaries & a section listing family names, with genealogy of original settlers. Read about the gold nugget kept safe under a couch & about "49th State of Jefferson." It is a 6 X 9 hardcover. Price $19.95. To order call Rachel Smith Tomini, Publisher, (707) 668-5667 or write P.O. Box 365, Blue Lake, CA 95525.
