Book Description
Recent advances in genetic methodology are providing important aetiological and developmental information to the growing literature on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and related conditions. Attention, Genes and ADHD is the first book to review and integrate both behaviour-genetic and molecular-genetic advances in this area. It brings together international researchers to show how modern techniques may be applied to the investigation of ADHD, and reviews current findings in the field of ADHD and related conditions. The book looks at the application of behaviour genetic approaches to twin studies, and reviews diagnostic to ADHD, the relationships between reading, spelling and ADHD, and family and genetic influences on speech and speech and language. Chapters go on to consider the overlaps between ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder and to explore the environmental and genetic influences among these disorders. The neurobiological and genetic relationship between ADHD and Tourette's Disorder is also examined. The book reviews recent advances in molecular genetics - in particular a discussion of Fragile X as a model for a single single gene effects on ADHD, and the application of genetic methods and approaches to the study of candidate genes. Finally, the implications for education and intervention are discussed, and current and future roles of gentic studies of ADHD are explored, as well as implications of the sequencing of the human genome for child psychiatry.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder PDF Author: David Gozal
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1588293122
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 561

Book Description
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobehavioral disorder affecting 5–10% of children and adolescents and 3% of adults. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: From Genes to Patients aims to provide a comp- hensive, state-of-the-art overview of the critical aspects of ADHD, and hopefully will serve as a quick and up-to-date reference source for professionals with an int- est in ADHD. The book is divided into three major areas that follow an historical survey. The first group of chapters deals with current theories on the pathophysiology of ADHD, and focuses on neurotransmitters and the contributions and validity of animal m- els. The second section emphasizes the evaluation and treatment of patients with ADHD, from the day-to-day approach by the clinical psychologist to the more sophisticated anatomical and functional imaging strategies that have emerged in the last decade. In addition, chapters dealing with specific impairments, such as those pertaining to reading, social interaction, and working memory, are also included for more detailed analysis of these important aspects and their respective contributions to global functioning. The third and final section provides an expanded review on the pharmacotherapy of ADHD and the appropriate methods for selection of specific drugs for individual patients based on drug kinetics and gene expression. ADHD PDF Author: Hojka Gregoric Kumperscak
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1839624752
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 104

Book Description
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder. Previously, it was considered a disorder that affected children only. Recently, however, there is no doubt that ADHD can affect adults as well, but with different clinical presentation. Thus, it is critical to understand how the clinical picture of the disorder changes with development. Traditional ADHD diagnostic procedures are broadening and incorporating new entities like endophenotypes. Comorbidity is a rule, especially if ADHD is not recognized and treated early. New genetic studies bring deeper and more concise knowledge about the disorder’s etiology. This book addresses these aspects of ADHD to bring about more clarity and understanding of the disorder.
