The layered structure of the subsurface circulation, which had been predicted in the hypothetical model proposed prior to the research, is verified through Eulerian and Lagrangian measurements of current. By the use of the numerical model, the deep circulation of the Philippine Sea, which has been long supposed to be isolated from the North Pacific, is revealed to be derived in close association with that of the latter ocean. Behavior of the deep current around the equator is also clarified by numerical modeling. By the extensive use of sediment trapping technology, it becomes clear that sinking sediments play an important role in the distribution of chemical substances in the deep ocean. During March and April 1968, scientists aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson studied the thermohaline and density structures in the subarctic-subtropical transition zone of the central North Pacific. Additional hydrographic sections were made north of Kahuka Point, Oahu. Of the 130 STD stations planned for this area, 127 were completed and 3 were lost because of weather. The primary objectives of the field study were: 1) to investigate the mesoscale thermohaline and density structures in long meridional high resolution sections across the subarctic and subtropical boundaries. 2) to determine the mesoscale signatures of the subarctic and subtropical fronts at the boundaries of the transition zone. 3) to study the mesoscale dynamic height and baroclinic flow structures across the transition zone. 4) to access the submesoscale thermohaline and baroclinic flow variability in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Ridge.
