Faces of Discrimination in Higher Education in India

Faces of Discrimination in Higher Education in India PDF Author: Samson K. Ovichegan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317643445
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 215

Book Description
This book illuminates the experiences of a set of students and faculty who are members of the Dalit caste – commonly known as the ‘untouchables’ – and are relatively ‘successful’ in that they attend or are academics at a prestigious university. The book provides a background to the study, exploring the role of caste and its enduring influence on social relations in all aspects of life. The book also contains a critical account of the current experiences of Dalit students and faculty in one elite university setting – the University of Shah Jahan (pseudonym). Drawing on a set of in-depth semi-structured interviews, the empirical study that is at the centre of this book explores the perceptions of staff and students in relation to the Quota policy and their experiences of living, working and studying in this elite setting. The data chapters are organised in such a way as to first explore the faculty views. The experiences of students are then examined with a focus on the way in which their caste is still an everyday part of how they are sometimes ‘othered’. Also, a focus on female Dalit experiences attempts to capture the interconnecting aspects of abject discrimination in their university life. Faces of Discrimination in Higher Education in India explores: critical exploration of the Quota System policy and related social justice issues; faculty voices: Quota, caste and discrimination; students’ perceptions and experiences of the Quota policy; being a ‘female Dalit’ student; positioning caste relations and the Quota policy: a critical analysis. This study will be of interest to educational sociologists examining policies in education and analysts of multicultural and South Asian studies. It will also steer pertinent discussions on equality and human rights issues.

Book Description
"A very useful book for those who look for a comprehensive view of the higher education scene in India." --Loyola Journal of Social Science "This is a useful book for those who look for a comprehensive view of the higher education scene in India." --Loyola Journal of Social Sciences "Higher Education Reform in India is an important addition to the pool of knowledge as it addresses some of the important contemporary issues and problems that the higher education system faces at the present. The papers have thematic continuity, empirical analysis, and, above all, direct policy implications. An important aspect of the book is that most of the papers highlight the problems of higher education in the broader social, political, and economic contexts. As the papers are written by experienced experts and based on rich information and proper perspective, the book is very useful to understanding our higher education system. It is useful for all those--students, teachers, researchers, planners, and administrators- -who have something to do with higher education." --Journal of Educational Planning and Administration As India's higher education system has grown, so too has the need for effective reform. This volume constitutes the first full-scale analysis of the reform efforts and the changes that have taken place in Indian higher education over the past four decades. Original essays in this book describe how some of the most interesting and innovative programs have come to fruition and analyze what occurred in certain key policy areas. Various contributors present case studies of recent developments such as the Open University, small- scale reforms, and arrangements for research and technology in universities. Others examine broader elements which shape the reality of higher education in India--financial arrangements, the complex language situation, the examination system, and problems of access to education.

The Future of Indian Universities PDF Author: C. Raj Kumar
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199091447
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 619

Book Description
At a time of social, political, and economic shifts across the world, India is faced with the pivotal challenge of addressing the state of its universities. In a region that was home to the leading higher learning institutions during ancient times, the descent in the quality of higher education offered by modern India’s universities is yet to create the desired impact. To be effective, universities will need to create institutional ecosystems that are reflective of the complex and interconnected worlds their graduates will live in. India’s extraordinary demographic profile creates a compelling need for its universities to reimagine their roles. The contributors in this volume argue for fundamental reforms to bring about a renewed sense of purpose. The chapters are authored by leading scholars in the fields of law, management, educational theory, liberal arts, international relations, and science and technology, and reflect the multiple approaches necessary to address the most difficult challenges in our times. The volume provides international and comparative perspectives on higher education, and will be immensely useful in highlighting issues being faced by Indian universities.

The Chinese Idea of a University

The Chinese Idea of a University PDF Author: Rui Yang
Publisher: Hong Kong University Press
ISBN: 9888754297
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 163

Book Description
In The Chinese Idea of a University: Phoenix Reborn, Rui Yang conceptualizes the cultural foundations of modern university development in Chinese societies. Instead of focusing on the uniqueness of the societies, this book aims to prove that one educational purpose could be fulfilled via many paths, and that most of the characteristics the university could be found in other institutions of higher learning. Citing the practices of four selected Chinese societies, Yang opposes the existence of an impassable chasm between Chinese and Western ideas of a university and argues that it is possible to combine Chinese and Western ideas of a university. Also, this book is one of the first in English to theorize the Chinese idea of a university. It links the historical events to the present, in a context of an enormous impact of Western academic models and institutions, from the beginning of modern universities in Chinese societies to the contemporary period. “The scholarship is of high quality, based on a thorough critical reading of relevant literature in both English and Chinese, as well as detailed empirical research carried out on the campuses of eight leading universities in the four Chinese societies under consideration.” —Ruth Hayhoe, professor, University of Toronto “Yang Rui has produced an academic masterwork. China has arrived as a global power and the East Asian university has achieved or largely achieved the long project of catch-up to the West. The future begins now and question of the ‘Chinese idea of a university’ should trigger much discussion. Professor Yang favors the development of hybrid East/West higher education in the Chinese civilizational zone, noting that to an extent, existing universities have taken this path already. He develops these challenging issues with a depth of scholarship far exceeding the current journal papers in the topic area, and a style of exposition that reads really well. A book of lasting importance. Highly recommended.” —Simon Marginson, professor, University of Oxford; joint editor-in-chief, Higher Education
