Ce travail de thèse s'inscrit dans la lignée des travaux de Lahire (1997) et Millet (1999, 2003) sur les manières d'étudier et les rapports au savoir des étudiants, mais également de ceux de Chevalier (2008, 2010) sur les étudiants STAPS et les relations entre carrière amateur et carrière étudiante. Nous nous inscrivons également dans une sociologie attentive à l'impact des idées (analysées en tant que dispositions cognitives) sur les comportements sociaux. A partir de résultats d'enquêtes par questionnaires, d'entretiens auprès de plus de 90 étudiants et diplômés STAPS et d'observations réalisées au sein d'une université, l'objet de cette recherche est d'interroger les processus cognitifs sous-jacents à la carrière étudiante, plus particulièrement à la réussite d'études universitaires de niveau Master, à la formation d'un professionnel et à l'insertion professionnelle. Il apparaît que la réussite de la carrière nécessite de franchir différentes étapes marquées par des " turning points " (Hughes, 1996) " cognitifs ", et de construire des dispositions cognitives hétérogènes (parfois contradictoires) qu'il s'agit de savoir activer au bon moment. Par ailleurs, réussir sa carrière étudiante, c'est-à-dire non seulement ses études mais également son insertion professionnelle, semble nécessiter de la part de l'étudiant d'entrer dans une dynamique d'" intellectualisation " et de " professionnalisation " de certaines dispositions cognitives, notamment des rapports au savoir, au sport et au métier.
