Mechanism of Action of Antimicrobial and Antitumor Agents

Mechanism of Action of Antimicrobial and Antitumor Agents PDF Author: J. F. Snell
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642463045
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 752

Book Description
This volume is the third in the series devoted to Antibiotics initiated by Springer Verlag in 1967. The first two volumes were devoted to the Mode of Action of Antibiotics and Biogenesis, respectively and were received graciously. During the intervening years these two works have been used often by research workers and students alike and have been quoted extensively. Although a number of other excellent treatises on antibiotics have appeared, the Springer series has set a standard for thoroughness and quality that meets the need of the scientific community. It is against this background that the present Editors set about the preparation of a third volume in the Series on Antibiotics. Since the appearance of Volume I, also dealing with Mechanism of Action, tremendous strides have been made in the depth and breadth of our knowledge of molecular biology, microbial chemistry and molecular pharmacology and of their direct application to studies on the mode of action of drugs. The field of molecular biology itself was in its relative infancy during the preceding decade and the unique role played by many anti biotics in the development of our understanding of nucleic acid synthesis and function and its relationship to protein synthesis and cell physiology has led rapidly to a very precise, understanding of how many of these same antibiotics inhibit susceptible cells.

Cardiomyopathy and Myocardial Biopsy

Cardiomyopathy and Myocardial Biopsy PDF Author: M. Kaltenbach
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642667724
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 427

Book Description
The aim of this book is to give an up to date account of recent developments in the field of cardiomyopathy. Many authors, all experienced workers in their fields, - most from Germany - have contributed to this volume. It would appear that the diagnosis of cardiomyopathy is now made more often than it was 10 years ago. The reason for this is probably not that the incidence of the disease has increased, but that it is better recognized. Where conventional clinical investigation may have failed to define the underlying disease process in a given patient, improved or more widely used diagnostic tools, such as selective coronary arteriography and endomyocardial biopsies, have contributed greatly to proper diagnosis. Furthermore, uniformity of terminology has also taken place during the last few years, permitting more accurate categorization of patients suffering from this entity. The difficult subject of terminology is discussed in a special section.

Experimental and Clinical Progress in Cancer Chemotherapy

Experimental and Clinical Progress in Cancer Chemotherapy PDF Author: Franco M. Muggia
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461325633
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
As in CANCER CHEMOTHERAPY 1, this volume brings to the reader highlights in three different areas of cancer therapeutics: new concepts and models; drug classes; and clinical settings. Topics were chosen because of their timeliness or probable current impact in cancer treatment. Authors were selected on the basis of their ability to provide a critical overview of specific subjects and their involvement in original work. I shall review the aims of this second volume, and then elaborate on the scope of its con tents. The principal aim of the volumes on cancer chemotherapy in the' Cancer Treatment and Research' series, as stated in the preface to the first volume, is to assemble in a concentrated form selected ingredients of chemothera peutic progress. These ingredients are to include concepts in therapeutic strategy, pre-clinical studies, development of major classes of compounds, identificatlon of new directions and of landmarks of clinical progress. Thus we do not foresee overlap with series which provide an yearly update of chemotherapy in an encyclopedic manner, or reviews of cancer chemother apy. Unlike those publications, our volumes are not intended to seek a place in shelves as a reference manual. It is this Editor's hope that persons repre senting various biomedical disciplines will seek the' Cancer Treatment and Research' chemotherapy volumes to survey advances in the field at regular intervals.

Fermentation Products

Fermentation Products PDF Author: Claude Vezina
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483148467
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 617

Book Description
Advances in Biotechnology, Volume III: Fermentation Products is the third of a series of three volumes and is based on the proceedings of the Sixth International Fermentation Symposium (IFS-6) held in London, Ontario, Canada, 20-25 July 1980. This volume contains 87 papers organized into nine sections. The papers under Section I deal with developments in the field of secondary metabolism (functions of secondary metabolites in the producing organisms; roles of plasmids in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites; and protoplast fusion in industrial microorganisms). Sections II to VII examine the fermentation of antibiotics; amino acids, vitamins, and nucleotides; microbial enzymes; products from immobilized cells and enzymes; mycotoxins; and biopolymers. The final two sections present studies on bioconversions. The volume also includes the invited keynote address of Professor Hamao Umezawa ""Problems and Trends in the Development of New Antibiotics and Other Useful Microbial Products"". This volume will be a valuable resource for students and researchers in industrial microbiology, biochemical engineering and related areas, as well as managers of biotechnology.
