The EU Expansion
Author: Lynda Lee Kaid
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9780820481739
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 268
Book Description
The EU Expansion analyzes the communication strategies of candidates and parties in the 2004 European Parliamentary elections. These elections marked the first opportunity for the selection of representatives to the enlarged European Parliament. They also provided an important opportunity to study how candidates and parties strike a balance between communicating the need to preserve the sovereignty and culture of their countries with the increasing realization that Europe can only preserve its significance in the world by forging a unified economic and political federation. Research and analysis from both longstanding EU nations and those entering for the first time are provided. Chapters focus on the background and significance of the elections; the content of the party and candidate communications in representative countries; news media coverage of the elections; the effects of these communications on voters; and the unique perspectives of how the elections were covered and perceived around the world.

The EU Internal Market in Comparative Perspective
Author: Dominik Hanf
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9789052014241
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
The European Union's internal market is the «hard core» of integration and by far its most precious asset. However a number of deep-seated factors have impeded the development of a systematic and wide-ranging academic research programme dedicated to the internal market. The purpose of this book is to begin to address this predicament with a tri-disciplinary analysis of the internal market, as scant opportunities for mutual understanding and learning across disciplines (law, economics and politics) currently exist. Internal market scholars from all three disciplines collaborated on this project, in which each chapter was read and critiqued by a scholar from a different discipline. The editors trust that this unique exercise reveals to many readers the enormous potential for in-depth and continuous analysis of the internal market and all that it entails. It also provides an accessible text for students and scholars from all three disciplines interested in the internal market.

EU Competition Law and Policy
Author: Thorben Schenk
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3638649849
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: 1,0 (A), Leeds Metropolitan University, course: EU Policy and Business, language: English, abstract: Competition between companies, governments and states within and across the global trading areas1 has become a vital part in this new world of less political and economical boundaries. Competition law therefore has to regulate the market powers of those who participate in the global exchange of goods and services. "There are now at least 80 systems of competition law in the world, in all continents and in all types of economies; many others are in contemplation.[...]"2. It has a substantial impact upon the outline of agreements. With Articles 81 and 82 of the EEC Treaty EU jurisprudence and the legislative bodies of the Member States (MMS) have a basis to work on this topic of immense importance. Ignoring the competition rules not seldom lead to large fines being levied by the European Commission (in July 1991 Tetra Pak was fined because of competition law infringement with a record sum of ₤52mn)3. The aim of this essay is to briefly outline the scope of EU ́s competition policy and laws and to give an insight into both the Agreements of Minor Importance ("de Minimis") and the impact of Competition Law on the topic of parallel (grey) imports. The latter is examined on a case study given. The basis of this essay consists of secondary literature taken from books, treaties, articles, notices or webpages. A full bibliography can be found at the end of the main part.

Turkey's Quest for EU Membership: Recent Developments
Author: Gisela Spreitzhofer
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3638873374
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 40
Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: A- (Gut), School of Advanced Internatl. Studies (School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)), course: Europe and Islam, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Until the formal opening of accession negotiations on 3 October 2005, the long history of EU-Turkey relations seemed to resemble a never-ending story - to the potential benefit of both sides. While Brussels was able to influence Turkish domestic and foreign policy with instruments of conditionality, reform-oriented currents in Ankara gratefully used this external pressure to modernize the country. But at some point, any enlargement process has to set deadlines, enforce conditions, and draw consequences. Therefore, the start of accession talks represented a positive development in so far as it gave a new stimulus to a process that had started slowing down. However, in November 2006, after Turkey had refused to open its ports and airspace to the Republic of Cyprus, EU-Turkey relations once again deteriorated significantly, leading to Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn's much-quoted statement of a "train crash" scenario. Apart from the Cyprus issue, other developments such as the slowing pace of domestic reforms, the signs of rising of both nationalism and political Islam, and the declining public support for EU membership in Turkey itself (now less than 40%) as well as abroad reconfirm that relations between the two are going through a tumultuous phase - which is unlikely to change for the better soon, given that presidential and parliamentary elections are taking place in Turkey in 2007. This paper's goal is to depict and analyze EU-Turkey relations as they have unfolded during the last few years. In order to place recent developments in an accurate historic perspective, I will start by shortly summarizing the relationship from the very beginning until 2005 when official e

The Special Legal Character of the EU
Author: Georg Schwedt
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3638751910
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 33
Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: A, University of Lapland, 11 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Looking at the character of the legal system it can be recognised that there are elements of many different legal systems, for instance state, federation, international organisation. Especially from the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992 on there are is a tendence towards a closer unification visible, as the establishment of the European Union and the current debate about a constitution show. The extent to which the examination of the legal character takes place is, due to the length of the essay and the large number of features of the legal system, a brief one, which can naturally not take in account all the possible arguments. It looks at 8 categories, which can give good evidence to solve the question of the legal character of the EU.
