Case Studies of Applied Advanced Data Collection and Management

Case Studies of Applied Advanced Data Collection and Management PDF Author: Bob O. Benn
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9780784475720
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 420

Book Description
Sponsored by the Committee on Advanced Data Collection and Management Systems of ASCE. This casebook offers examples of civil engineering practices in the acquisition and use of data obtained with advanced aerial and ground-based remote collection systems. The first section deals with remote sensing imagery and data utilization and applications to water resources site and route selection, environmental inventory, land use, and facilities. Specific applications include photobathymetry, landsat imagery, and energy-loss surveys using thermalØinfrared technology. Noncontact and contact data collection and data relay systems are reviewed, along with surface temperature mapping, photogeodesy and hydrologic telemetry from remote areas. The final section presents discussions on data processing and its applications to both data organization and information extension.

Assessment of Safety and Risk with a Microscopic Model of Detonation

Assessment of Safety and Risk with a Microscopic Model of Detonation PDF Author: C.-O. Leiber
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 9780444513328
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 626

Book Description
Whereas the current plane wave, homogeneous flow detonation physics is an excellent engineering tool for numerical predictions under given conditions, the multi-hot-spot-model is an additional tool for analyzing phenomena that cannot be explained by classical calculations. The real benefit comes from being able to understand, without any artificial assumptions, the whole phenomenology of detonations and explosions. By specifying pressure generating mechanisms, one is able to see that the current treatment of the detonics of energetic materials is only a very special - but powerful - case of explosion events and hazards. It becomes clear that physical explosions must be taken into account in any safety considerations. In these terms it is easy to understand why even liquid carbon dioxide and inert silo materials can explode. A unique collection of unexpected events, which might surprise even specialists, has resulted from the evaluation of the model.-

Perspectives in Running Water Ecology

Perspectives in Running Water Ecology PDF Author: M. Lock
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468411225
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
The discipline of stream ecology has grown exponentially along with most other areas of science in the last three decades. The field has changed from a fish management-dominated poor-sister of limnology to a discipline with theoretical constructs and ecological insights as rich as those in any area of ecology. A focus on energy transformations, nutrient turnover and the storage and processing of organic substrates has greatly enhanced the development of current paradigms. For example, the data base on microbial-biochemical invertebrate interactions in streams is now very extensive. A survey of the stream ecology literature reveals the central role played by H.B. Noel Hynes, whom I believe to be the world's premier lotic ecologist. Professor Hynes produced the major text in the field ("The Ecology of Running Waters") which has served both as an integrative review and as a bridge between the fish-water quality orientation of the fifties and sixties to the process oriented, nutritional resource-watershed perspectives of the seventies. It should also be noted that Professor Hynes' book, "The Biology of Polluted Waters", served as a basic reference for the earlier period and he has published over 150 research papers, the great majority in stream ecology, spanning four decades.
