Book Description
Beths mother loved to tell this story. One morning when Beth was three or four years old, she stepped out onto their front porch wearing coveralls. A man approached on the sidewalk. Seeing her he called out, Hello, little boy. I am not a boy, Beth called back. Im a girl. Little girls dont wear coveralls, he informed her. This girl does, she informed him. That little girl, supremely indifferent to popular opinion, determined to think for herself and set her own rules, has stayed alive in this author throughout her long, very healthy and happy life. This is a book of ideas. The author tells of incidents in her own life and in the lives of family members and friends to illustrate these ideas. In mid-life she slowly changed from what is considered logical, critical, left brain thinking to emotional, illogical, right brain thinking, dismantling her left brain beliefs brick by brick and replacing them with what many in the western world would consider weird nonsense. She developed psychic powers, was repeatedly amazed at the power and range of human consciousness and began to live in a bright new world filled with surprises and certainties, a magical, wonder-filled world.

Dance as Intermedial Translation

Dance as Intermedial Translation PDF Author: Vanessa Montesi
Publisher: Leuven University Press
ISBN: 9462704392
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
This book is situated in the breach opened up by recent debates on inherited notions of text, language, and translation that followed the emergence of new technologies. It examines two works of contemporary dance, Marie Chouinard’s Jérôme Bosch: Le Jardin des Délices (2016) and Mathieu Geffré’s Froth on the Daydream (2018), as examples of intermedial translation. Conceptualising translation through the lens of theatrical dance allows us to see the translation process as a creative, corporeal, and political practice of negotiating human and non-human agencies, deeply intertwined with issues of memory and struggles over representation. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical debates from translation theory, dance studies, cultural theory, gender studies, postcolonialism, art history, cognitive linguistics, multimodality, film studies, and memory studies, as well as on concrete examples of performative works, the book charts a course for the development of dance translation as a legitimate, if still under-researched, subfield of translation studies.

Imagine Living Life Well with Perspective & Perseverance PDF Author: Maureen Whitaker
Publisher: Fulton Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1649524447
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 1810

Book Description
Book Two: Imagine Living Life Well with Perspective & Perseverance Volume III New Spiritual Adventures & We Learn Anew Volume IV Experiences Across the Pond on Familiar Terra-Firma At one point while having discussions, Liam says in an eloquent manner, "It's as if you've taken the veil off science, opened the veil into metaphysics and thrown them together, shook them up and out the other side emerges amazing truths, the proof of which will, I believe, shake the two, science and metaphysics to its core, once it is known." While at lunch, the doctor's wife, Lilly, a Microbiologist, tells Anna and Liam about her identical twin and home country of Wales. They cannot figure why Lilly speaks with missing words and often slowly. As events occur, they have many Life Changes, realizing their Life Challenges and began to really learn how to Live Life Well. They have reason to believe there are Mysteries of the Universe and Everything Happens for a Reason. Dave shows Anna 'the object' he inherited from his twin, Frank. This opens to Mysteries of the Universe and to some special times, as wonderful insights were provided about it. They wonder if it was a Codex, like in the Da Vinci Code story. It is complex and causes the 'book within a book' to be born. Liam's medieval armour is returned from forensics and the case is closed. Something is wrong with Lilly. They soon learn what. Anna and Liam help Dave, their doctor, deal with life matters. There is a great discussion of how to know who people in this life are from knowing of Past Lives. Liam 'works out' in his armour. Liam begins the 'Sport of Kings' in the Medieval Society to make his goal a reality. Anna and Liam renew their wedding vows. Next is Book Three.

Dancing in Blackness

Dancing in Blackness PDF Author: Halifu Osumare
Publisher: University Press of Florida
ISBN: 0813065070
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 390

Book Description
American Society for Aesthetics Selma Jeanne Cohen Prize in Dance Aesthetics Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award Dancing in Blackness is a professional dancer's personal journey over four decades, across three continents and 23 countries, and through defining moments in the story of black dance in America. In this memoir, Halifu Osumare reflects on what blackness and dance have meant to her life and international career. Osumare's story begins in 1960s San Francisco amid the Black Arts Movement, black militancy, and hippie counterculture. It was there, she says, that she chose dance as her own revolutionary statement. Osumare describes her experiences as a young black dancer in Europe teaching "jazz ballet" and establishing her own dance company in Copenhagen. Moving to New York City, she danced with the Rod Rodgers Dance Company and took part in integrating the programs at the Lincoln Center. After doing dance fieldwork in Ghana, Osumare returned to California and helped develop Oakland’s black dance scene. Osumare introduces readers to some of the major artistic movers and shakers she collaborated with throughout her career, including Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, Jean-Leon Destine, Alvin Ailey, and Donald McKayle. Now a black studies scholar, Osumare uses her extraordinary experiences to reveal the overlooked ways that dance has been a vital tool in the black struggle for recognition, justice, and self-empowerment. Her memoir is the inspiring story of an accomplished dance artist who has boldly developed and proclaimed her identity as a black woman.

Wait Till You See Me Dance

Wait Till You See Me Dance PDF Author: Deb Olin Unferth
Publisher: Graywolf Press
ISBN: 1555979629
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 201

Book Description
“Deb Olin Unferth’s stories are so smart, fast, full of heart, and distinctive in voice—each an intense little thought-system going out earnestly in search of strange new truths. What an important and exciting talent.”—George Saunders For more than ten years, Deb Olin Unferth has been publishing startlingly askew, wickedly comic, cutting-edge fiction in magazines such as Granta, Harper’s Magazine, McSweeney’s, NOON, and The Paris Review. Her stories are revered by some of the best American writers of our day, but until now there has been no stand-alone collection of her short fiction. Wait Till You See Me Dance consists of several extraordinary longer stories as well as a selection of intoxicating very short stories. In the chilling “The First Full Thought of Her Life,” a shooter gets in position while a young girl climbs a sand dune. In “Voltaire Night,” students compete to tell a story about the worst thing that ever happened to them. In “Stay Where You Are,” two oblivious travelers in Central America are kidnapped by a gunman they assume to be an insurgent—but the gunman has his own problems. An Unferth story lures you in with a voice that seems amiable and lighthearted, but it swerves in sudden and surprising ways that reveal, in terrifying clarity, the rage, despair, and profound mournfulness that have taken up residence at the heart of the American dream. These stories often take place in an exaggerated or heightened reality, a quality that is reminiscent of the work of Donald Barthelme, Lorrie Moore, and George Saunders, but in Unferth’s unforgettable collection she carves out territory that is entirely her own.
