Book Description
Excerpt from Dance Index, 1944, Vol. 3 From Kiev Tchelitchew went, indirectly, to Constantinople where, two years later, he designed six ballets for the company of Vic tor Zimine, a pupil of the dancer Mikhail Mordkin. As had been the case with The Geisha, the designs were simple for the bal lets which the troupe of half a dozen dancers presented were short and were changed each week. But in them Tchelitchew realised some of the theatrical'possibilities of cubism, to ward which his ideas had turned. The lines of the fairy tale costumes which he straight ened to heighten the fantasy suggested to him the larger possibilities in the same direction which he used in subsequent productions. He saw that in movement ballet costumes could become quite different from their stationary forms, and he began to include all the per mutations a costume might undergo in his original conception of it. Time and the Dancing Image

Time and the Dancing Image PDF Author: Deborah Jowitt
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 9780520066274
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 436

Book Description
"If dance itself is a way of making ideas both visual and visceral, Deborah Jowitt has discovered a literary voice in Time and the Dancing Image in which nineteenth- and twentieth-century thought, in its relation to theatrical dancing, becomes sensuous."--Sally Banes, Cornell University "The most vivid and immediately accessible serious dance book ever written. Anyone from a neophyte to an aficionado will be challenged, enlightened and delighted by Jowitt's clever juxtapositions."--Allen Robertson, Dance Editor, Time Out, London "In this brilliant book Deborah Jowitt has given us a fresh approach to dance history and criticism. Instead of seeing dance in the usual way--isolated in a windowless room, with mirrored walls--she looks to the society in which dance evolved. Using the ideas of contemporary artists and thinkers, she illuminates changing tastes--from the elegant, ethereal sylphs of the 1830s to the agonized characters in the dances today. For her reader, Ms. Jowitt opens both the eyes and the mind to the wonders of a many-faceted art."--Selma Jeanne Cohen, Editor, International Encyclopedia of Dance

Nijinsky

Nijinsky PDF Author: Richard Buckle
Publisher: Open Road Media
ISBN: 1453249230
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 389

Book Description
A story of triumph and tragedy, hailed as “the definitive biography” of ballet’s greatest male dancer (The Times Literary Supplement). From Richard Buckle, one of the all-time leading authorities on golden-era Russian dance, Nijinsky is an account of the rise and fall of perhaps the most iconic ballet performer of the twentieth century, Vaslav Nijinsky. Drawing on personal conversations with countless people who knew and worked with Nijinsky, including his sister and famed choreographer Bronislava Nijinska, Buckle’s intimate and astonishing portrait reveals a master whose reign was all too brief. As a dancer, interpretive artist, and choreographic pioneer, Nijinsky reached unparalleled heights. His breathtaking performances with the Ballets Russes took Western Europe by storm, and his avant-garde choreography for The Afternoon of a Faun and The Rite of Spring, both now regarded as the foundation of modern dance, caused riots in the streets. Through his liaison with the great impresario Sergei Diaghilev, Nijinsky worked with the artistic elite of the time—including Alexandre Benois, Léon Bakst, Claude Debussy, Mikhail Fokine, Tamara Karsavina, Anna Pavlova, and Igor Stravinsky—and lived in an atmosphere of perpetual glamour, hysteria, and intrigue. But when Njinsky married Hungarian aristocrat Romola de Pulszky, Diaghilev abruptly dismissed him from the Ballets Russes. Five years after the betrayal, Nijinsky was diagnosed with schizophrenia and declared insane, and the final curtain fell on the world’s most famous dancer. This remarkable biography both celebrates Nijinsky’s profound genius and shadows his descent into the madness that is inextricably linked with his legendary reputation.
