Quantitative Genetics of Substitution Lines Involving Chromosome I of Common Wheat

Quantitative Genetics of Substitution Lines Involving Chromosome I of Common Wheat PDF Author: Conrad Frederic Wehrhahn
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Quantitative genetics
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
An analysis of the genetics of the quantitative characters height, number of days to heading, weight per plant, and number of tillers per plant was made using a method based on monos cmic breeding procedures. It was found that one gene with pleiotropic effects was responsible for most of the genetic differences among the substitution lines. The gene is not on chromosome I. It was also found that four genes may differentiate Thatcher from Chinese Spring wheat with respect to earliness. The same four genes may be responsible for most of the genetic variation for yield observed In the backcross progeny resulting from a cross between Chinese and Thatcher. An appraisal of the monos cmic procedure for the genetic analysis of quantitative characters is made.

Advances in Wheat Genetics: From Genome to Field

Advances in Wheat Genetics: From Genome to Field PDF Author: Yasunari Ogihara
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 4431556753
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 421

Book Description
This proceedings is a collection of 46 selected papers that were presented at the 12th International Wheat Genetics Symposium (IWGS). Since the launch of the wheat genome sequencing project in 2005, the arrival of draft genome sequences has marked a new era in wheat genetics and genomics, catalyzing rapid advancement in the field. This book provides a comprehensive review of the forefront of wheat research, across various important topics such as germplasm and genetic diversity, cytogenetics and allopolyploid evolution, genome sequencing, structural and functional genomics, gene function and molecular biology, biotic stress, abiotic stress, grain quality, and classical and molecular breeding. Following an introduction, 9 parts of the book are dedicated to each of these topics. A final, 11th part entitled “Toward Sustainable Wheat Production” contains 7 excellent papers that were presented in the 12th IWGS Special Session supported by the OECD. With rapid population growth and radical climate changes, the world faces a global food crisis and is in need of another Green Revolution to boost yields of wheat and other widely grown staple crops. Although this book focuses on wheat, many of the newly developed techniques and results presented here can be applied to other plant species with large and complex genomes. As such, this volume is highly recommended for all students and researchers in wheat sciences and related plant sciences and for those who are interested in stable food production and food security.

Cytogenetics Of Aneuploids

Cytogenetics Of Aneuploids PDF Author: Gurdev Khush
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323156290
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
Cytogenetics of Aneuploids deals with the cytogenetic aspects of aneuploidy in plants, emphasizing the trisomics, monosomics, and nullisomics and cytogenetics of substitution lines as well as alien additions and substitutions. An account of aneuploidy in animals and man is also given. This volume is organized into 12 chapters and begins with an overview of terminology and chromosomal formulas, along with a brief history of the cytogenetics of aneuploids as a field of enquiry. The next chapters review the entire literature on trisomics, their sources, cytology, transmission rates, genetics, morphology, anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. The discussion then shifts to monosomics and nullisomics, including their sources and cytology as well as breeding behavior, morphology, and genetic studies. Other uses of monosomics and nullisomics are considered. The following chapters deal with intervarietal substitutions and alien additions and substitutions, emphasizing different methods of producing substitution lines and their utility in genetic analysis and practical plant breeding programs. The book concludes by describing special features of aneuploidy in animals and highlighting specific cases of aneuploidy in the animal kingdom. This book will be of interest to plant breeders and geneticists.
